Cape Town – It’s going to be a tough choice to decide whether Ricky Januarie or Bolla Conradie should be at scrumhalf when the Stormers open their Super 14 rugby season with a match against the Bulls at Newlands next week.Allister Coetzee, assistant coach of the Cape side, said on Wednesday the two Springboks were performing well in training.
They also had competition from enthusiastic young scrumhalves in the Stormers squad, he added.
Januarie, one of the Stormers’ new acquisitions, has been a regular second or third choice for the Springboks. This could make him the favourite to start the match against the Super 14 champions on February 16.
“Ricky’s best asset is the speed with which he distributes the ball,” Coetzee said. “He is also a fighter; the kind of scrumhalf one wants in a messy situation.
“His opponents have to watch him, because there is always the danger of him making a break.
“He is much more than a scrumhalf who merely passes the ball. I also think his ability to kick with his left foot is underestimated.
“Bolla has also been showing up well and it’s going to be a tough choice. Both are looking sharp, and there are also young players coming through,” Coetzee said.
