THE Vodacom Cheetahs are a more physical side than a year ago. This is according to the head coach of the central franchise, Naka Drotksé. “We had to deal with a huge blow when we lost Jacques Nienaber (fitness instructor) at the end of the Currie Cup season. We however with the help of PVM appointed Niel du Plessis in Nienaber’s place. He suggested that we follow a more practical approach in our training. I was a little bit concerned at the start, but our match against the Sharks have shown that the team is a lot more physical as a year ago,” said Drotské. Nienaber is now the Stormers’ fitness instructor.
Drotské watched both the Vodacom Cheetahs pre-season matches of 2007 and 2008 against the Sharks and was happy with his team’s progress. The coach rates the Sharks as one of the most physical sides in the Super 14 competition. The Vodacom Cheetahs are looking to better their previous efforts of 12 th and 11 th position the competition. With a new looking coaching staff in Drotské, Hawies Fourie (backline coach), Dawie Theron (forwards coach) and Eric Sauls (manager) the central franchise have the capability to achieve a higher position in the competition this year.
