A nice surprise – Wales coach Warren Gatland has named his team to face Italy in the RBS 6-Nations a full 11 days before kick-off!

Former Irish coach Gatland has made six changes to the team that beat Scotland, bringing in a new halfback pairing in Dwayne Peel and Stephen Jones. The front row is also completely new: Gethin Jenkins, Matthew Rees and Rhys Thomas are the fatties coming in. Man, these Welsh boyos certainly don’t believe in a lot of variety when it comes to names!

The final change is at wing, where yet another Jones, Mark this time, comes in at the expense of Jamie Roberts. Roberts? Doesn’t sound bloody Welsh to me!

Here’s the team, pinched from News24:

Lee Byrne, Mark Jones, Tom Shanklin, Gavin Henson, Shane Williams, Stephen Jones, Dwayne Peel; Gethin Jenkins, Matthew Rees, Rhys Thomas, Ian Gough, Ian Evans, Jonathan Thomas, Martyn Williams, Ryan Jones (captain).

Replacements: Huw Bennett, Duncan Jones, Deiniol Jones, Gareth Delve, Michael Phillips, James Hook, Sonny Parker.

  • Gatland getting cocky with the Mallet
Not very wise move on his part……
