A bit of a topsy-turvy weekend in Super 14, with a few results not going the way most punters thought they would. Let’s have a look at the standings in our very own Sharksworld pool in the score prediction game over at www.superbru.com.
Game 1: Crusaders v Brumbies
The home team won their opener at Jade by a whopping 34 points to 3. The winning margin of 31 was far higher than any of us predicted, although everyone in the pool at least got the winner right. Congrats to Salmo for getting the bonus point here, with his pick of Crusaders by 23 closer to the actual result than anyone else’s. No margin point, though, as it wasn’t close enough for that.
Game 2: Reds v Highlanders
This one went a little against the expectations, with more than half of the pool getting the winner wrong. The Reds eventually won by 22 to 16 – a margin of 6 points. No fewer 11 of you picked up a margin point here, with the pool bonus point split four ways. That’s right, Villie, Lylmik, Sandshark and the_finman all picked the exact margin on this one.
Game 3: Sharks v Force
Is it really surprising that we ALL picked the Sharks to win this game? A winning margin of 7 points meant a win point for everyone, 26 margin points and a share of the pool bonus for the three guys who got it exactly right, KSA Kette, Salmo and Debs.
Game 4: Blues v Chiefs
A bit of a runaway victory for the home side, at the end. Not too many predicted a Chiefs upset, but there were some. A final score of 32-14 meant a margin of 18 points. We had four punters close enough to get the margin, but it was Whindy who walked away with all three points for his prediction of Blues by 16. Remember, to get the bonus point, you don’t need the exact margin. You just need to be closest.
Game 5: Waratahs v Hurricanes
To say opinion was divided on this one would be an understatement. The Tahs prevailed by 17 points (20-3) meaning at least half of you got the result wrong. Five margin points handed out and the maximum score going to Fatality, the only one to predict the exact margin correctly.
Game 6: Stormers v Bulls
Far too much using the heart and not the head to pick this one. The majority of you went with the Stormers, but it was our favourite team in blue that took the spoils by 7 points (16-9). 11 Margin points handed out here and the bonus split three ways between sharkboy, Dive Pass and IceBabe.
Game 7: Cheetahs v Lions
A pretty surprising result this one, the Lions prevailing by a point. Most of the pool went with the home team (myself included) and were not very well rewarded by the choking Cheetahs! As this one was so close, a number of you who picked the Cheetahs to win by a slim enough margin actually did manage to get a margin point, although obviously no win point. Ghost10 was the closest here, picking the Lions by 3, so he walks off with the spoils.
So, how do they stand? Looking at the top 3, we see it is really close, as you’d expect this early in the competition. Fattmann and Nita are currently in joint second spot, on 7.5 points each (although IceBabe is just a shade behind on 7.33) but it is Lylmik who holds top spot (and the bragging rights) after round 1, with a pretty credible haul of 8.25 points. Keep it up, all.
