SA Rugby are offering an incentive of R 1 million for the Province that is crowned Vodacom Cup champions in 2008.
SA Rugby Managing Director, Jonathan Stones, said the incentive would increase interest in the tournament, ensure a higher standard of competition and make a meaningful contribution to game development.
SA Rugby and Vodacom have stipulated that 50% of the prize can be shared amongst the victorious squad whilst the other 50% must be utilized by the winning Province for game development projects.
“The lure of a million Rand will undoubtedly incentivise players in all 14 Provinces to raise the bar,” said Stones.
“In addition to creating excitement and interest, SA Rugby and Vodacom agreed that the incentive was a fantastic way in which to celebrate the first decade of the Vodacom Cup and herald in the next era in the evolution of the tournament.
“We have also made sure that the winning Province will have to invest R 500 000 into development, which will contribute to the future of the game in that region,” Stones said.
The tournament was first played in 1998 and the 2008 version, kicking off on February 23rd, will be the 11th in its history.
Sarah Williams, Brand Manager for Vodacom Cup, said everyone at SA Rugby and Vodacom was very excited at the prospect of what the 2008 edition will deliver. “Given that there is so much more for the teams to play for, it is fantastic that Vodacom will be able to make a further contribution to future development, whilst also building on its already strong profile at local level,” she added.
