Trying to answer the above question is a bit perplexing, seeing as the team’s official site is, as usual, quite shockingly behind the times.
A squad of 26 was duly named, but it appears that there have been three late withdrawals, as captain Juan Smith, flyhalf Jacques-Louis Potgieter and journeyman winger Gavin Passens have all been left at home. The actual squad is a ragtag bunch that quite frankly, appears on a hiding to nothing.
CJ van der Linde, who has still not completely recovered from his calf complaint, is included and will add much-needed experience and leadership to the squad. Bees Roux has been left out, meaning former Shark Ronnie Uys gets the fourth front-row spot, alongside regular starters Wian du Preez and Kobud Calldo. The Strauss cousins pick themselves at hooker, while lock Rory Duncan assumes the tour captaincy. He is joined in the second row by Barend Pieterse, Flip van der Merwe and Dawid de Villiers.
It seems as though ex-Bok opensider Hendro Scholtz will come into the tour party to cover for Smith. The other loose forwards are Brüssow and Floors on the short side, with Vermeulen and Darron Nel providing the lineout options.
The cupboard is pretty bare in the backs, as always. Tobie Botes (a scrumhalf) comes in to replace Potgieter, indicating that the versatile Tewis de Bruyn may well serve as Conrad Barnard’s deputy at flyhalf. A number of the 12s in the squad, inter alia Meyer Bosman and Herkie Kruger, could also cover at 10 in a pinch. Once again, JW Jonker is the only outside centre in the entire group.
Former Boland flyer Jongikhaya Nokwe comes into the squad for Passens, joining Eddie Fredericks and Hennie Daniller in the back three. The Cheetahs open their tour with a match against the Chiefs in Hamilton this weekend, before facing the Crusaders, Waratahs and Brumbies thereafter.
