There was some debate on various websites last night on whether the Yellow card on Bakkies Botha and the Red card on Zane Kirchner were warranted or not.
It seems they may both have been warranted unless the Sanzar citing commissioners have been give a different brief of late.
Bakkies Botha has been cited for a dangerous clean and Zane Kirchner has been cited for an off the ball spear tackle on Dusty Noble.
The hearing will take place this morning at 9am (SA Time) in Pretoria.
Has a different brief been handed to the citing commissioners or were these cards warranted? There seems to be a lot more citings this year than last year.
I believe the Zane Kirchner card was definitely warranted and from what was seen on television he will get a longer suspension that JP Nel. JP Nel lifted, turned and dropped Francois Steyn and for that he got a 1 week suspension. Not really a spear tackle but definitely dangerous.
Zane Kirchner did more than that though. Zane Kirchner lifted, turned and drove Dusty Noble down in the tackle. He basically gave a 100% accurate demonstration of a spear tackle. That Noble landed on other players rather than the ground is very fortunate for him and I am sure for Kirchner. Zane Kirchner’s Red card was deserved.
On Bakkies Botha it’s not that simple. I don’t believe Botha’s Yellow was deserved, at least not at that stage of the match. What Bakkies got his Yellow for was in my opinion worth no more than a penalty and I believe a citing for this is a bit over the top. However I suspect that Bakkies has been cited for an earlier incident and hopefully we will have clarity on this after the hearing this morning.
Earlier in the match Bakkies was on his knees next to a ruck and then proceeded to “clean” at one of the Lions players on the ground. I think it was Willie Wepener. The clean itself may not have been that bad but to me it looked like Botha went in leading with the head.
If Botha has been cited for the yellow card then I believe they have gotten it wrong. If it was for the earlier incident then I believe they got it right. I will await the outcome with interest and hopefully from that we will have clarity.Tweet
