Bulls reshuffle backs

Frans Ludeke has named regular flyhalf-cum-centre Morne Steyn to start at fullback against the Reds in Brisbane. An injury concern over Wynand Olivier, however, means there is a slight possibility that a further re-shuffle might take place before kick-off.

The Bulls backline actually looked halfway decent against the Lions with Steyn at 12 and Olivier outside him. The return of regular 13 JP Nel, coupled with the unavailability of fullback Zane Kirchner (and Ludeke’s somewhat baffling decision not to replace him in the tour squad) means that Steyn is the most logical choice to wear the number 15 jersey. Olivier moves back to 12, reuniting the same centre pairing that have looked so completely out at sea in all three of their appearances so far this year.

Olivier has a hamstring niggle, though and should he not be passed fit, Steyn will move back to 12, with Bryan Habana taking over at fullback – a position he has never played competitively. In this scenario, the woefully inept Danwel Demas will come in at left wing. Either way I’m starting to regret picking the Bulls to win this one!

The pack remains unchanged from last week, with Bakkies Botha passed fit, despite also suffering a hamstring injury in training. In another strange move, loose forward Dewald Potgieter is named in the 22 shirt, indicating that he will be covering the back three off the bench.

Vodacom Bulls:

15 Morné Steyn, 14 Akona Ndungane, 13 JP Nel, 12 Wynand Olivier, 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Derick Hougaard, 9 Fourie du Preez (capt), 8 Pedrie Wannenburg, 7 Wikus van Heerden, 6 Danie Rossouw, 5 Wilhelm Steenkamp, 4 Bakkies Botha, 3 Rayno Gerber, 2 Derick Kuün, 1 Gurthrö Steenkamp.
16 James vd Walt, 17 Werner Kruger, 18 Dean Greyling, 19 Deon Stegmann, 20 Heini Adams, 21 Stephan Dippenaar, 22 Dewald Potgieter.

  • JP Nel in the starting Xv

Does Ludeke know who he is going to bring in to replace JP next week?

  • Nah – he doesn’t believe in replacing suspended players.

He’ll play Dewald Potgieter at 13.

Actually if he plays like he did last week then he is a great asset to the team.

  •

Ooooh ja that comment can be construed as:

JP being an asset when he is not on the field, although that is true but it is not what i meant.

    And

It can be construed as Wynand Olivier being an asset if he plays the way he did last week. THAT is what I meant.

  • that’s the frustrating thing about Wynand. He will be so shit for two years straight, then put in one performance of real quality, just to make you change your mind about him ;)

  • When last (before the S14) did he play any top level rugby for a sustained period though?

My answer to that would be LAST years S14.
    he missed the CC
had minimal game time in the RWC.
So I would say he could be given a few games to find his feet (or touch judge).
I think he may actually perform well again this weekend

  • This weekend is going to be fun with the Fantasy leagues.

    Most teams are making changes.
Tuiali’i not starting for the Saders is one of the more influential changes.

  • I have brought in Daniel this week. I know the Sharks have a bye next week, but I honestly reckon Keegan will get on the scoresheet at least twice this weekend.

Still waiting for JP Bloody Pietersen to remember hoe to get to the tryline
