Charles Louw and Steve Atherton have named a weakened side for their visit Welkom to play the Griffons in a fourth-round Vodacom Cup clash on Friday night.

Frank Wagenstroom and Andries Strauss are left out in the backs, making way for Lwazi Mvovo and Luzuko Vulindlu respectively. The latter is a sturdy inside centre, at 98kg built like the proverbial brick, erm, outhouse. Riaan Swanepoel moves into the number 13 shirt this week. Charl Macleod gets a start at 9, after spending last week on the Sharks bench and he will partner former u21 star Tiaan Marx.

In the forwards, Sharks regulars Deon Carstens and Steven Sykes will get some more much-needed gametime under their belts, while Skipper Badenhorst gets a rare start at hooker ahead of Jody Jenneker. Big Nik Blignaut is on the bench this week too, with Warren Whitely, another recent under 21 player, handed a start at number 8. Justin Downey will get a rest too, his place on the blind-side going to former Shosholoza crewmember, Shaun Pammenter.

Here is the side:

15. Danie Dames
14. Henno Mentz
13. Riaan Swanepoel
12. Luzuko Vulindlu
11. Lwazi Mvovo
10. Tiaan Marx
9. Charl McLoed
8. Warren Whiteley
7. Shaun Pammenter
6. Skholiwe Ndlovu
5. Steven Sykes
4. Alistair Hargreaves (Capt)
3. Robbie Harris
2. Skipper Badenhorst
1. Deon Carstens

Replacements
16. Jody Jenneker
17. Melusi Mthethwa
18. Nikolai Blignaut
19. Schalk van Jaarsveld
20. Neil de Bruin
21. Sizwe Zondo
22. Carl Bezuidenhout

  • I don’t reckon they’re taking the Griffons all that seriously. Hope they don’t lose

  • Spyker

someone summed it up damn weel the other day.

The Wildebeest are not seen as a team they are seen as a place for the S14 guys coming up to the fringe of selection to keep themselves fit/get match time.

  • yeah. Also doesn’t help that they have a huge squad that all needs gametime.

They should actually look to loaning some fringe players out
