The Wildebeest scored five tries to beat the Griffons 32-7 (halftime 10-0) in a Vodacom Cup match in Welkom on Friday night. The win was the Wildebeest’s second in four outings to keep them in the hunt for a fourth place finish behind the three runaway leaders in th southern section.

The Griffons’ points didn’t arrive until ten minutes from time when Hein Edwards won a lineout ten metres out and offloaded the ball to flank Charl von Maltitz, who barged through to score.

Otherwise it was all one-way traffic. Early on scrumhalf Charl McLeod started the procession by getting onto the end of a good backline move in the left hand corner.

Eight minutes before half time a break by Riaan Swanepoel opened the way to the line for wing Lwazi Mvovo to make it 10-0 while the Griffons missed two penalty attempts and a drop goal from flyhalf Johann van Niekerk.

No 8 Warren Whiteley scored the third try at the start of the second half and midway through the second half replacement scrumhalf Sizwe Zondo came up with the bonus point try.

The final try arrived in the final minute when flanker Skholiwe Ndlovu crossed to complete an impressive victory in slippery conditions.

Griffons: Try: Charl von Maltitz. Conversion: Johann van Niekerk.

Wildebeest – Tries: Charl McLeod, Lwazi Mvovo, Warren Whiteley, Sizwe Zondo, Skholiwe Ndlovu. Conversions: Tiaan Marx (2). Drop goal: Marx.

  • I saw on Friday that Scott Mathie wasn’t even on the bench. Does anyone know what happened to him. He played the week before for about 15 minutes and it was his first game back after injury.

  • This was a second-string team. I’m sure Scott was given the week off, along with Strauss and a few other regulars.

  • But why give him a week off when he has only played once since last season? Along with Deon he has been out with injury for months. He had a shoulder op in December.
