Pierre Spies will wear the Vodacom Bulls’ number 8-jersey when they run out against the Blues in Auckland on Saturday.

Spies, who was on the sidelines for a number of months due to a blood ailment, will play in a loose trio with Wikus van Heerden and Pedrie Wannenburg.

The BBRU reports that Wannenburg moves to flank in the place of Deon Stegmann and Bakkies Botha will again form a formidable second row combination with Danie Rossouw.

Zane Kirchner has served his two match suspension and will again be wearing the number 15-jumper while Morné Steyn will be one of two backline reserves on the bench.

Frans Ludeke has opted for two loose forwards in Stegmann and Dewald Potgieter among his five two bench while Werner Kruger, who is able to play left and right, will be the only prop among the reserves.

Vodacom Bulls:
Starting XV: Zane Kirchner; Akona Ndungane, JP Nel, Wynand Olivier, Bryan Habana; Derick Hougaard, Fourie du Preez (Capt); Pierre Spies, Wikus van Heerden, Pedrie Wannenburg, Danie Rossouw, Bakkies Botha, Rayno Gerber, Derick Kuün, Gurthrö Steenkamp.
Substitutes: Bandise Maku, Werner Kruger, Wilhelm Steenkamp, Deon Stegmann, Heini Adams, Morné Steyn, Dewald Potgieter.

  • Spies and Habana will make a great difference.

    So will JP Nel.

    For different reasons though.

Why is this guy persisting with Nel ahead of Steyn?

  • I would be VERY surprised if he plays more than 50min.

Dan Retief’s take on the issue.

Pierre Spies, after close to nine months on the sidelines, has been rushed into the Bulls side for their Vodacom Super 14 match against the Blues in Auckland on Saturday. (Kick-off 08.35).

Spies, who flew to New Zealand last week to bolster a battling Bulls side, has seen no action since August last year when he was shock withdrawal from the Springbok Rugby World Cup squad after blood clots were found on his lungs.

It was feared at the time that he might never play rugby again but he refused to accept the original diagnoses and has spent the past nine months under the care of the Bulls medical team in an effort revive his career.

Spies has been training with the Bulls but has had very little contact so it is a sign of the desperation in the camp of the ailing champions that he has been rushed in action so soon after arriving on tour.

The Bulls, it might be said, have reached ground zero in their defence of their Super 14 title and will also have Bryan Habana back on the leftwing as well as Zane Kirchner (back from suspension) at fullback for their encounter with the Aucklanders.
