Terry Jacobs scored a hat-trick of tries to help Vodacom Western Province to a convincing 59-19 (halftime 45-0) victory over the Pumas at the Faure Street Stadium in Paarl on Saturday.
The first half was one way traffic and the hosts made their intensions clear as early as the fifth minute when speedster Zhahier Ryland scored the first try for the home side following some slick handling by the backline.
Although the Puma forwards held their own in the tight exchanges, the Province backs just had too much pace for the visitors.
Soon after Ryland’s try, his fellow winger Jacobs crossed over for two tries in as many minutes, showing some serious pace on both occasions.
Backline players Paul Delport (scrumhalf), Morgan Newman (centre) and flyhalf Isma-eel Dollie all broke the opposition line to score five-pointers and the only forward to cross the line was tight-head prop Michael de Neuilly-Rice, who did so in spectacular fashion, running over Ruan Lamprecht a la Jonah Lomu.
In the second stanza, the men from Mpumalanga played with increased determination and gusto, stunning the hosts with two quick tries through wing Gordon Pangeti and flanker Johan van Heerden but the game was well out of their reach at that stage.
Jacobs scored his third try in the 62nd minute, but the best try of the day was from Puma replacement front ranker Morne Kruger who scored a try against the run of play, sprinting from his own 22m line and showing the entire Province backline a clean pair of heals.
Stand-in captain Francois van der Merwe scored at the death to seal a resounding victory for the unbeaten south section log leaders.
