Lions coach Eugene Eloff has named prop Eugene Maqwelana to start at tighthead against the Highlanders in Dunedin on Friday. Promising Ross Geldenhuys moves to the bench.

In the only other change to the run-on team, Joe van Niekerk will move to blinside flank to take the place of injured skipper Ernst Joubert, Willem Alberts comes in at number 8. Cobus “Baywatch” Grobbelaar takes over the captaincy and the way this man has been playing, I think we should start to call him “Superman”, after the other guy who likes to wear a red speedo! Former Sharks squad member and provincial cricketer Dewald Senekal has been named on the bench.

The backline is unchanged from the unit that played the Reds and Eloff will be hoping that his charges manage to fire against the worst side to come out of New Zealand in a long time. Come on, Lions! If you can’t beat these guys, you won’t beat anyone.

Lions team: Louis Ludik; Dusty Noble, Jaco Pretorius, Walter Venter, Ryno Benjamin; Jaco van Schalkwyk, Jano Vermaak; Willem Alberts, Joe van Niekerk, Baywatch Grobbelaar (capt), Gerhard Mostert, Anton van Zyl, Eugene Maqwelana, Willie Wepener, Heinke van der Merwe.
Ethienne Reynecke, Ross Geldenhuys, Dewald Senekal, Franco van der Merwe, Chris Jonck, Rudi Vogt, Jannie Boshoff.

  • there is always hope that the lions can turn thing around overseas normaly the SA teams tend to have 3 teams that have ok overseas legs and 2 of the 3 has good legs the stormers had a good one so its up 2 the Sharks and the lions

  • Sheez barend not sure I agree with that.

i would say SA teams usually have shockers while on tour with 1 maybe 2 teams doing well on tour.

  • lets say the lions only need to beat 2 teams on tour pick any team above them to loose.
3 would be better for us.
