Togan import Epi Taione almost cost the Sharks dearly in their match against the Hurricanes, when he was red carded on the hour for a cynical (and frankly stupid) headbutt. Expect the big man to cop a lengthy ban for the second time in his career.
Taione’s is a career that has been fraught with controversy. Leaving the Newcastle Falcons to join the Sale Sharks in a high profile move back in 2006, Taione left the midlands side soon afterwards, having been banned for six weeks for a shameful biting incident. Taione opted to end his own contract with the Sharks, thus avoiding the ignominy of having it ripped up in front of him.
This latest incident is sure to see him banned for at least a month, taking him out of contention for the rest of the Sharks tour and possibly the entire campaign. Don’t be too surprised to see Tainoe back in Japan before the week is out, with the promising Jean Deysel sent an SOS to join the tour.
Taione will appear before judicial officer Nick Davidson QC on Monday.Tweet
