The two controversial Australian referees whose decisions probably influenced the results of Super 14 matches in which two South African sides were involved over the past fortnight, are both reported to be scheduled to officiate in South Africa next weekend.

Rugbyweek reports that the Sanzar refereeing appointments for Weeks 10-12 were leaked this week after a delay many thought was due to the controversy surrounding Australian referee Paul Marks’ poor handling of the match between the Sharks and the Hurricanes in Wellington last weekend.

Marks’ decision not to involve the television match official (TMO) in the very last move of the match, created much controversy and almost certainly cost the Hurricanes a victory. He will be in charge of the match at Loftus between the Bulls and Highlanders next Saturday, and will also be the 31st man in the Cheetahs clash against the Highlanders on May 2.

Two weeks ago James Leckie and his touch judge missed the blatant obstruction on Pierre Spies that saw the Blues score the try that cost the Bulls the match in Auckland.

Leckie is scheduled to officiate in the game between the Stormers and the Hurricanes next Saturday and is also in charge of the Stormers’ match the following weekend against the Highlanders.

South African referees Jonathan Kaplan and Marius Jonker will each control one match in Rounds 10-12 while Craig Joubert has been appointed for two matches.

It should be noted however that a SANZAR official in Australia has confirmed to Super14.com that the appointments have not been released yet and that they are expected to be released early next week.

  • problem with Marks is that he just doesn’t know what he’s doing. His calls are a complete lottery. It’s not like he’s biased.

  • Also happy with the refs. Would have preferred Lyndon Bray to Bryce Lawrence but otherwise no complaints.
Not a big fan of Chris Pollock yet but he’s young and learning.
At least the Aussies fired George Ayoub who was the Willie Roos of Aussie refs.

Steve Walsh is decent. Yes he made a huge mistake in the Super 14 final but it was actually the touch judge who failed us more!
