Time to get behind our team

I’m hearing a lot of talk about the Stormers carrying South Africa’s hopes in this year’s Super 14, given their impressive display against the Cheetahs. Glancing at the log, though, there’s a different South African team up there in second position, still unbeaten after 8 starts.

A lot has been said and will continue to be said about the Sharks’ performances to date. I’ve seen the word “luck” figure prominently. Pundits bemoan the lack of ties, the lack of bonus points and question the coach’s selections, tactics and everything else in between.

I think we need to catch a wake up. The Sharks are still unbeaten. No other SA side in the history of this competition has EVER gone 8 games on the trot without losing. We stuffed the Blues and showed our mettle in digging deep against the Bulls, Canes and Highlanders. It doesn’t matter what you do against the minnows in this competition; it’s how you face up to the big challenges that will define your season.

The Stormers have done well and will continue to do so. They have our full support and I for one hope they can give the Canes a massive hiding this weekend. They could well move into the top four should that result go their way. Even a single point against the Brumbies will see the Sharks safe in second, though and to my mind there is absolutely no reason to expect that we won’t get more out of the game.

The tour from hell continues. We have got through the first two weeks relatively unscathed and now it’s time for the boys to show their mettle in Canberra. They need our support most at a time like this, so let’s drop all the negativity, recognise their achievements so far and get behind them this week with everything that we have.

Love them or fear them, guys. Sharks Forever!

  • Go Sharks, now’s the time to start peaking. The Loftus match did help to put the Sharks game againt the Cane’s into perspective. considering our draw againt the Cane’s in New Zealand

  • and when the Highlanders stuff the Bulls and the Cheetahs, I think it will put this weekend’s result into perspective as well.

We’ll really see how good the Sharks are this weekend when the Stormers play the Canes.

If the Stormers smash them then you guys really need to start pulling finger.

The Bulls are hopeless (even we should have beaten them)

And we’ve done okay against the minnows…time to go out there and get results against the stronger sides.

I have to say we’ve had the worst schedule I’ve ever seen but we have to overcome all of this if we want to gain more respect in the rugby world and even be crowned champions.

    Sharks forever!

  • The real issue here is the lopsided draw that sees you either have a very easy tour (with the Blues the only really good opposition) or an impossible one, like we have this year.

  • I’ve been pretty outspoken against the half-hearted Sharks performances we’ve seen this season, but of course they’re still near the top of the log aren’t they?

Frustrating to see that, once again, we’ve heard plenty of positive commentary about the other SA sides. We had John Robbie waxing lyrical about the Cheetahs (!) earlier in the season. The Bulls camp took some time to shut the hell up, but it now seems to have done so. The Stormers? I still like them as a team, for sure. Yet, although they’re playing better, they’re still not a patch on the Sharks when our boys kick into gear (Blues game anyone?).

Just ONCE, I’d like to see our local journos give these boys some credit. We’re nearly top of the log, for the second season running, and there’s barely a whisper about it in the sports news. Ridiculous.

yip that is imo the true indicator of the sharks season, best start i can remember for sure. get the knives out when they actually lose a 7 in a row like the lions.

  • This is a very important weak, which i think might define the SA S14 season. The Sharks have the brumbies, by no means easy, but the Tahs at Subiaco and the Saders afterwards are definitely two games that any team could drop. Not saying they will, but the Brumbies is one to target imo, and a 4-point win is good enough.

The stormers face a very good canes team, 50 points against the Bulls 1st side (and it is a great side) at Loftus should put down a huge marker for Rassie’s boys to take heed of. That said the 1st half by the stormers against the cheetahs was imo the best half of rugby played by an SA side this year…brilliant.

I think the sharks still pose SA’s best chance, cos they have a great tight 5 and all-important depth. If both the sharks and stormers come away with a win this weekend, they are setup very nicely indeed.

robd, don’t have a clue, always will support them but i watch the sharks and stormers games first this year since i think the SA sides must try and get into quarters for the good of the Boks, i.e. confidence in our rugby.

  • I know the site is called Sharksworld, but come on now Don Roberto! We need to contextualise this- most people are praising the Sharks- its the fervent Sharks fans who are getting wary, partly as we know our Unions history of going out with a whimper, not a bang. We need to admit our faults before we can fix them, and this team has a few right now. Blame the high standard we hold our team to…

  • Rob,

While I agree that 8 on a trot is great I don’t get the we can and should win feeling.

The defensive effort (barring this last weekend and the Steyn & Murray concerns) has been great but our attack has been pretty tame.

I think we should support them but expect more. We need week in and week out improvement in our game.

We could learn a bit from the Stormers attack.

  • I bet we don’t feel so crappy now after “not losing” against the Canes in WET WELLINGTON! Our defence has really been fantastic…

If AJ was at his peak our balance would be very different…but all in all the Sharks have good structures in place and even if we can lose some players we do have sufficient back-up in MOST positions.

pity AJ and one of Smit and Percy not around, only weaknesses (if you can call them that) i can think of are at 4, 7 and some real pace outwide. Sharks are talking of buying Juan, if so, they will be awesome.

  • I know you guys are all saying that the Sharks had the “tour from hell”, but if you hope to win this tournament, then you need to win games against anyone, anywhere. I just get the feeling that, had the Crusaders been given a similar tour, they would have expected to get close to full points out of it.

You could say that the Stormers could arguably have had just as tough an away tour because even though they played one game less, they had to play 2 of the better teams early on (Force and Blues) as well as the Chiefs and Reds, who are definitely no easy beats overseas. To get three 5-pointers on tour was quite an achievement.

I’m a Stormers supporter, but I always support any South African sides that play. Now that 2 local teams are in contention, however, it’s every team for themselves. And if the Sharks (or any team above the Stormers) drop points at this stage, then it can only be good for the Stormers.

It’s definitely not about how you start in this tournament, or how many wins you get in the first half of the season. Crunch time normally starts about now, and it’s about how you handle the pressure once you have a result or 2 go against you.

Cab is right though… the more that SA sides win in NZ and Oz, the more belief it gives the players in the Bok side that they can do the same.

  • KSA,
yeah going to be v.interesting games both stormers/canes and sharks/brumbies, dunno who to call, i’d probably go canes and sharks if my wee fella was on the block, hope not tempting fate.

    Blackshark,
very true also, especially at home where the cheetahs and even lions are good enough to have won more, but the bulls committment on saturday was truly pathetic esp with that talent. they dont seem to have any suporters when losing, but packed when winning.

    Ghost,
yes we are at the business end, but the sharks have made a great start (same as last year), which other SA teams do not do. If stormers for example had won 1 of the their first three they could afford to drop a game against canes, but they dont, whereas the sharks do have the luxury to now drop a game or even 2 on tour (hopefully they dont and aim for a clean sweep).

    haha Rob, looks ok actually.

  • My BIG worry is getting a home semi but having to then travel (after beating the Stormers? ) to the Final in Christchurch.

Something else that I was worried about has come to fruition. that is that even if we beat the Saders they have enough of a lead over us to still stay top.

Let’s say a miracle happens and we go through the season undefeated………. then we are still going to finish second if the Saders only lose to us.
