Epi to appeal

Sharks Tongan flanker ‘Epeli Taione will appeal his 6-week ban for a head butt to Hurricanes second-rower Jeremy Thrush.

The hearing has been scheduled for Thursday and will take place via teleconference. The appeal tribunal, which comprises a member from each of the three SANZAR nations, will hear evidence from Taione and the Sharks in mitigation of a sentence which both parties feel was harsh, given the unintentional nature of the indiscretion.

Taione has been banned in the past for biting and this incident apparently weighed heavily in the decision to award a 6-week ban. The defence will argue that the player’s good conduct since, as well as his commitment to charitable causes, including funding rugby development in his native Tonga from his own pocket, are reasons to consider reducing the length of sentence to a more reasonable 3 weeks.

More news as it happens.

    :???:

Anyway…if similar offences get 3-4 weeks I guess he’s got a right to appeal. Good Luck Paddy!

  • yeah, BS… he still claims it was unintentional. I don’t reckon it could have been.

  • unintentional

Look I will be very happy if he gets a reduction in sentence but it was anything but unintentional and if he DOES get a reduction in sentence then for once the FARCE of the judiciary committees have rolled in our favour.

DB and i were talking the other night and he disagreed with me quite a bit. I feel Taione was valuable when he was on the field for us so far this season.

  • KSA- I concur…he was valuable…we needed someone to go through the tired bodies without fear and he showed that he was capable of that.

Even in that Canes game I thought he was making some things happen but then he “unintentionally decided” to do what he did.

It was the DECISION that was unintentional.

It is much more clear to me now. They should reverse his bann completely and let him play this weekend.
