Silly season continues, with rumours aplenty.
Victor Matfield, widely regarded as the best lock in the world, joined French second division club Toulon on a 6-month contract after the World Cup, with the option to renew or back out after that period. Obviously the Frogs are very keen for him to stay and are trying their level best to attract his soul-mate, Bakkies Botha, to the club, much to the Bulls’ chagrin.
Reports on Keo suggest that Big Vic is on the verge of packing it all in and returning to Pretoria; he’s had enough of being a nobody in France, despite all the cash and wants to go back to his loyal fan base in the Jacaranda city. Problem is, the professional outfit that he knew and loved (and led with distinction) has, within the course of just three months, morphed into the Frans Ludeke circus. Surely Matfield would be mad to consider rejoining the Bulls under the current circumtances?
Another story doing the rounds, though, links Vic with a £375k a year transfer to big spenders Northampton in the English Premier League. Again, this is just rumour and conjecture, but my word, could one ever live comfortably on that sort of money! Certainly it’s the sort of figure that would have the calculators out around the kitchen table back at Maison Matfield en Toulon.
