John Mametsa and Rocco Jansen each scored two tries as the Blue Bulls slaughtered the Lions 51-7 (half-time 36-7) in a one-sided Vodacom Cup semi-final at Loftus Versfeld on Friday.

News24 reports that the Bulls were just way too clinical, playing with intent, intensity and aggression to totally overwhelm the visitors. They dominated the set pieces and rucks, passed impeccably and defended like demons.

Their confidence going into the game and perhaps their disdain for their neighbours was telegraphed by the fact that they had no less than three players with Super rugby experience starting on the bench.

In fact, the Bulls made their intentions patently clear from the onset when centre Braam Gerber scored a try following a quick tap by John Mametsa in the first minute of the game.

The Lions on the other hand looked sluggish and their defence was diabolical. They just did not look like a team that had come to play for the R1 million that is on offer for the competition’s winners.

Damage already done

By the time the Lions (in the 25th minute) introduced their “secret weapon” and danger-man in Springbok centre Jaques Fourie making his return after a long injury layoff, the hosts had scored 29 unanswered points and the damage was already done.

At that stage the men from Pretoria had bagged their bonus point for four tries as Jansen, Mametsa and inside centre Ruan Boshoff had added to Gerber’s first minute effort.

The Lions pulled one back towards the end of the first spell when young Prop Gert Muller barged over after a drive from a lineout, thanks to a yellow card to hooker Brett Sharman for a professional foul.

The Bulls however negated this when flanker Okkie Kruger cantered over following a turnover to go into the break with an unassailable 36-7 lead.

Tried to up the tempo

The home side took their foot off the pedal in the second half as they appeared to reserve their energy and limit injuries ahead of the finals.

They kicked out of hand and opted for poles from penalties they would have normally kicked for touch and try to drive over.

The Lions tried to up the tempo but still failed to cross the line. They lost too much ball at the contact situations.

Jansen raced 60m down the left touch line to score his second following the umpteenth turnover while Mametsa grabbed his second following a scrum on the left. The backs simply ran the ball though the hands and the popular winger strolled over the line in the other corner.

Blue Bulls: Tries: Braam Gerber, Rocco Jansen (2), John Mametsa (2), Ruan Boshoff, Okkie Kruger. Conversions: Burton Francis (5) Penalties: Burton Francis (2).

Lions: Tries : Gert Muller. Conversions: Andre Smit.

  • Can’t understand why Mametsa never got more of a run with the Super 14 side
