Road to the play-offs

We All scratched our heads about the permutations that could or couldn’t see the Sharks make the Semi’s. Hell Racheltjie even got a headache and had to lie down. Well Jan De Koning from Rugby 365 has saved us all some great headaches with his Road to the play-offs piece.

The Crusaders will finish first or second after the completion of the Super 14 league stages, with 85 percent of the round-robin matches completed. Only the Waratahs can still catch the runaway leaders, the Crusaders, at the top of the standings.

And for the Waratahs to overtake the Crusaders they will have to win both their remaining matches by large margins – probably about 50 points in each game – and then hope the Crusaders don’t get any league points.

All the Crusaders require to finish top of the standings is a solitary bonus point from their two remaining matches – against the Reds in Brisbane and the Highlanders at home.

Those are the only certainties, with two weeks of league action remaining.

Effectively eight teams are fighting for the three remaining places in the play-offs, scheduled for later this month.

With the Waratahs and Stormers going head-to-head at Newlands this week, it is likely one of them could fall by the wayside. They both know they have to keep on winning. Their last matches are against the Reds away (the ‘Tahs) and the Lions away (Stormers).

The Hurricanes also still have their own destiny in their hands, with games against the Western Force (at home) and Blues (away).

Below that it is a case of the teams desperately hoping for some results to go their way.

The Chiefs, Sharks and Blues have a fair shot at the play-offs – but with the Sharks and Chiefs going head-to-head in Durban in the final week, only one of them can make it. Any defeat for either in the last two weeks will be the end of the road.

The Brumbies and Western Force are going to require some extraordinary permutations to go their way – not to mention that the Force have to overcome the high-flying Hurricanes. But then again, they did beat the Chiefs this past weekend, so nothing is impossible.

We look at each team’s prospects with two weeks of league action remaining!

  • Racheltjie

(without giving yourself a headache) How do we get 2nd?

*Sanzar penalise Stormers 20 points for playing Ollie?
*Sanzar penalise Waratahs for having a kak Jersey?
*Sanzar award Sharks a win over Hurricanes because taione was sent of in error?
    * All of the above?

  • Ok, so if the the Stormers beat the tahs without a bonus and lose to the lions, the tahs lose to the reds and the canes lose to the force and the blues, we’ll finish 2nd, as long as we get max points in our next two games

  • I’ll start looking at the permutations after our game against the Cheetahs. We need 5 points there…

Out of the Top 6 we are the ONLY team playing BOTH games at home…surely that should count for something. Come on Sharkies…we have to create an atmosphere for the guys at the Shark-tank. No sitting around chewing fingernails…we have to shout, sing, clap and wave those black and white flags in the air till those Cheetahs go dizzy. Come on

  • Talk about Shark Flags.

A mate of mine has one as his “locator” flag on the back of his quad in Qatar. Virtually EVERY Qatari who meets him when he is out riding wants to buy his flag off him.

    GO SHARKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • It was great thanks – the family enjoyed the diving. The weather wasn’t that good – but at least it didn’t rain. A lot of cloud cover. Still much warmer than the weather everyone experienced in Jhb – so think in all we did well.

  • Hi Rob – managed to find a pub in Moz to watch the game on Saturday. The guys played better – we could have won that one. Definitely need a decent kicker though!

  • Just to lighten the dark thoughts about the Sharks’ fall from grace:

    - How the fight started:

I rear-ended a car this morning on the way to work

I knew right then and there that it was going to be a REALLY bad day.

The driver got out of the other car, and wouldn’t you know it…. He
    was a dwarf.

He stormed over to my car, looked at the damage, looked up at me and
    said,

    ‘I’m not F%CKING Happy!’

So I said ‘Well, which f%cking one ARE you, then?’

And that’s how the fight started……

  • ok – have we run out of dwarves yet? ;)

DP… those Reds-Tahs matches are close affairs, usually. Also, they will be coming back from SA, whereas the Reds are at home for the last two games.

It’s a real possibility. Problem is, though, the Tahs only need 5 points in two games and then we can’t catch them anymore…
