Rassie sticks to winning combination

Exactly the same match 22 that did duty last weekend will be taking the field on Saturday when the Vodacom Stormers tackle the Waratahs at Newlands in an important Vodacom Super 14 match.

The Stormers official website reports that all the players who sat out training earlier this week due to niggling injuries have been included in the side and coach Rassie Erasmus said it was good to be able to select the same squad.

“It’s nice. At this time of the season I believe the more settled the combinations and team the better. There are no coaches at this stage who are rotating or resting players, apart from when there are injuries,” commented the coach.

“So ja, it’s nice to pick the same team and hopefully they can gel nicely on Saturday.”

The former Springbok admitted that a long and hard season is starting to take its toll on the players. “Everybody got niggles at this stage.

“Normally the Super 12 season is finished now – now it’s semi-final and final time, so it’s a bit tough with two extra games. Mondays are normally the days when you can see the bumps and bruises.

“We have a bit of an injury with Tony’s groin and Brian has the flu, but otherwise it’s the normal bumps and bruises – nothing major that should keep any of the guys out of the mix on Saturday.”

Erasmus said he was keeping an eye on the weather situation, but admitted he was not sure whether his side preferred dry or wet weather.

“We had a chat about it on Sunday. For the last 3 games we’ve been preparing for wet weather or dry weather. I can tell you this is probably the weekend we are expecting it (wet weather) the most according to weather forecasts, but already this morning there’s been a slimmer chance of showers.

“It is difficult in Cape Town. I’ve only been here for six months now, so I’m not too sharp with that, but we are preparing for both. I am sure guys like Tiquri, Palu, Polota-Nau, Beale and those guys would also like dry weather.

“They must be a bit tired of wet weather now, so whatever comes we’ll have to handle it. I am not sure what we prefer.”

Vodacom Stormers team: Conrad Jantjes; Wylie Human, Gcobani Bobo, Jean de Villiers (capt), Sireli Naqelevuki; Peter Grant, Ricky Januarie; Robbie Diack, Francois Louw, Luke Watson, Andries Bekker, Adriaan Fondse, Brok Harris, Schalk Brits, Brian Mujati.

Substitutes: Deon Fourie, Schalk Ferreira, Ross Skeate, Pieter Myburgh, Bolla Conradie, Tony Brown, Dylan Des Fountain.

  • it doesn’t matter who wins this match…. but if the losing team gets any points, it’s very bad news for us.

Especially if the Stormers win and the Tahs get bonus points.

Far better will be for the Tahs to thrash the Stormers

  • Stormers will need to up their game to beat the Tahs. Apart from the opening 30 min of the Brumbies game when they scored all their points, I didn’t think they were that good – more like indivvdual flashes of brilliance from certain players… Can’t see them being anymore of a threat in the semis than us at this point, no matter what the media says.

  • Did you see the latest article on Keo? It doesn’t take more than a sniff of competitiveness from the Cape for them to get back on their WP bandwagon, does it?

  • It’s nauseating Rob… of course now that the Strompies are playing fairly decent rugby (vs their previos mediocrity) the entire Cape media is now happily spinning away…

No ways is this Stormers team as good as the ’99 Stormers, and no ways will they win the S14. Not this year at least.

  • it irritates me, because I actually have no problem with the Stormers and the rugby they play. Back in 97 or so, they were my clear second favourite team. But when the journos start with this “kings of the world” kak it just gets my back up.

I guess it’s the same as a non-Sharks fan reading my stuff ;)

  • I agree Rob. Its exactly the same as all the hype that was drummed up over number 46. If the Cape Media & their fairweather friends (Keo & co) just kept their traps shut, I venture they’d be a lot more poular outside the W.Cape.

But then is Sharksworld, and so they MUST live with it!

  • Ag well… it’s like damned of you do, damned if you don’t.

This site is called SharksWorld simply so that anybody reading it has a pretty clear warning about the level of bias they’re likely to encounter in SOME of the reporting. Subjectivity is endemic to journalism… you can’t write without being subjective to an extent. As with most things in life, people should vote with their feet if they really disagree that strongly.

Fortunately, we are really open to debate here and I have no issue with anyone challenging my views, as long as they do it in an adult manner.

  • Must agree with you lot. Specially Keo and his lot make myself  as a Stormer supporter. Dont even go there because of this and to call us Mountain Goats make me de moer in.

When the Stormers struggle in the first few games they were on the verge of writting Rassie off but in no time they all seem to become Rassie lovers.

Man a real supporter stick to your team through thick & thin.
