Adi gets his chance

Adrian Jacobs at outside centre is the big surprise in the Sharks team to face the Cheetahs. Captain Johann Muller will not play and as a result AJ Venter will again assume the captaincy.

Hooker Bismarck du Plessis and veteran lock Johan Ackermann come back into the tight five, with props BJ Botha and Tendai Mtawarira as well as lock Albert van den Berg retaining their spots from last week. The loose trio is also unchanged from the unit that did well against the Crusaders, with Jacques Botes, Venter and Ryan Kankowski operating in the same positions they occupied for the bulk of last season.

Rory Kockott and Ruan Pienaar are the half backs, but Brad Barritt has been named on the bench along with Waylon Murray, meaning an extended run at inside centre for Frans Steyn, with new man Jacobs coming in as his partner. Pietersen, Ndungane and Terblanche are the back three, again unchanged from last week.

There are some interesting developments on the bench, where Barritt and Murray are the only backline replacements. Steven Sykes joins Keegan Daniel and Jean Deysel to give plenty of forward reserve options, together with front rankers Craig Burden and Jannie du Plessis.

Here is the team:

15 Terblanche, 14 Ndungane, 13 Jacobs, 12 Steyn, 11 Pietersen, 10 Pienaar, 9 Kockott, 8 Kankowski, 7 Venter (capt), 6 Botes, 5 Ackermann, 4 van den Berg, 3 Botha, 2 B du Plessis, 1 Mtawarira
16 Burden, 17 J du Plessis, 18 Sykes, 19 Deysel, 20 Daniel, 21 Barritt, 22 Murray

  • I’m glad Adi’s getting a start, but Id’ve preferred him at 12 and Verstaan at 13.

It’s going to be a hell of a high scoring game. That backline is going to leak tries… pretty sure they’ll score a fair few as well

  • I must say, starting Adi is a nice change, but it does completely fly in the face of the “continuity theory”. Unless tey’re going to leave him there, which would also be fine.

  • Wonder if Deon is injured again. He wasn’t on the bench last week either.

  • I also wondered about that…

Beat has just been playing so well, though… you can’t drop him. Also, Jannie is a far better bench option if you’re only going to have 1 prop there. He can cover both sides well, whereas Deon is really a makeshift at 3.

  • I suppose so – Deon is definitely better at loosehead – not so strong at tighthead. Just wondered.

  • Who cares about the props, they’re in form. An embarassment of riches really. It’s out wide where JP Pietersen & co desperately need rugby’s version of a viagra pill.

  • I’ve never really rated Adi to be honest.

Seems a nice enough guy, just never one of those guys that I’d pen in as a definite player who you cant afford to play.

And lets be honest he’s no Brad Barrit…

  • My summary of the year so far:

    Forwards: Magnificent

Backs: All should be wearing the Number Two (stinky)

    Find of the year: no-one

Dud of the year: all the backline players

Fred Michalak: Sorry, this guy does nothing for me. Au Revoir

Moment of the season: Epi’s brainfart. Thanks for nothing, mate.

What were you thinking award: Frans Steyn’s gift intercept. He even tapped it forward for good measure.

Forward of the year: Beast for his undying commitment

Miniscule mustard seed of hope: That Ruan Pienaar becomes the next great flyhalf. C’mon! play the guy at 10 from now on pleeeez

What’s working: Our defence especially around the fringes is unparalleled.

What’s not working: That fabled white line of chalk called the try-line

Dead Wood Award: Messrs VD Berg, Ackerman and Venter please collect your pensions at the door.

Ref Primadonna Award: Awarded to Bryce Spice

The one undisputed fact that not even the most biased sharks supporter can deny: the hurricanes were robbed by the worst decision in history.

  • Got to agree with you there Vinnie… he still has a nifty step, hasn’t lost much of his pace… and even though he hasn’t got much game time this season I’ve never really rated him as a starter… reminds me alot of Eddy Fredericks, similar players… I’d have no qualms starting either off the bench…

You are a little too easy on the forwards – they have been woeful at the break down, they haven’t got enough muscle in the loosies and have allowed far too many turn-overs.
