Chiefs coach Ian Foster says his players are “determined to give it everything” this weekend when they take on the Sharks in round 14 of the Rebel Sport Super 14 in Durban.

The Chiefs’ official website reports that Foster today named his starting 22 containing a couple of brackets and some player changes – reflecting the injury woes sustained in the Chiefs camp over the past fortnight.

“This tour has been very frustrating from an injury perspective, with this week being particularly hard for our medical staff. However, the team is getting more settled as the week goes on and we are certainly looking forward to Saturday night’s match (5.10am Sunday morning NZ time).”

“With seven wins already in this competition we know we can perform at the top level but the amount of significant injuries has again been a concern. We take confidence from those past performances and are determined to give it everything this weekend.”

In the forwards Tom Willis returns as hooker supported by props Aled de Malmanche and Ben Castle. Meanwhile, Jono Gibbes gets a starting spot at lock this week pairing with Kevin O’Neill.

Number eight Sione Lauaki, who is still recovering from a hamstring injury sustained last weekend against the Lions, is bracketed with loose forwards Hayden Hopgood and Faifili Levave.

In the backs, Brendon Leonard, who only arrived in South Africa earlier this week, returns to wear the number nine jersey and will combine with Stephen Donald at first five-eighth. Mils Muliaina will start at centre with Sosene Anesi at fullback. Sitiveni Sivivatu, who is still recovering from an ankle injury, is bracketed with Viliame Waqaseduadua.

The Chiefs team to play the Sharks on Sunday 18 May at Absa Stadium in Durban is:

Chiefs:
1. Aled de Malmanche
2. Tom Willis
3. Ben Castle
4. Jono Gibbes
5. Kevin O’Neill

11. Sitiveni Sivivatu/Viliame Waqaseduadua
12. Callum Bruce

  • Not a bad team, but de Malmanche isn’t a real prop, plus they have three or four guys in there carrying niggles.

  • Erm, not a bad looking team – only Lauaki’s replacement is truly a massive step down. Getting more nervous. Also got a feeling the bench & substitutions may be the catalyst – am hoping our bench has the edge there.

  • Dick (in studio) says: they will decide on Muller during the warmup before the game and if he plays it will be Muller / Sykes but if he isn’t fit then Albert will start and he will be partnered by Ackermann.

  • @walter van transvaal.co.za (Comment 18) :

Yeah i also saw the irony in that.

So is he by default implying that Barrit is a better 12?

He also wne ton to say that you don’t move Steyn around becasue he isn’t doing well in a position. IN my mind implying that he is using him where needed rather than where he is best.

    Brendon Leonard vs. Kockott
    Stephen Donald vs. Pienaar
    Sitiveni Sivivatu/Viliame Waqaseduadua vs. Odwa
    Callum Bruce vs. Barritt
    Mils Muliaina (capt) vs. Jacobs
    Lelia Masaga vs. JPP
    Sosene Anesi vs. Stefan

No BJ, no Steyn, Muller highly doubtful…

Chiefs going for a semi spot against all the odds…

    Comfortable bonus point victory Rob?

Oh ye that sees the other teams glass half empty…

Most supporters were picking Barrit ahead of Steyn based on recent performances. With Ackerman there and Skyes playing well, I have not worries in the locks department. At prop, unlike the Stormer, we have plenty depth – if BJ is not there he is replaces by Jannie ( a Bok) and his place on the bench is taken by Carsten ( a Bok).

Yes the Chiefs are good team but I still believe the Sharks are good for a bonus point….now the Stormer with only one real props against a resurgent team that beat the Chiefs (that you are trying to talk up) comfortably last week, now that’s another question….

Only his dad, Dick and Rob!

Ackerman there and Skyes playing well, I have not worries in the locks department No real worries, other than you lost your captain…

if BJ is not there he is replaces by Jannie ( a Bok) and his place on the bench is taken by Carsten ( a Bok).

How many games have Jannie and Carstens played this year?

Yes the Chiefs are good team

They beat the Crusaders, I would think so!

now the Stormer with only one real props against a resurgent team

I would hardly call 1 win in 11 weeks a resugance – but hey, whatever floats you boat!

And as for Kempson, go check his predictions from week 3 – his % is even worse than KSA’s!!!

  • @Dive Pass (Comment 29) : Okay, I take that back, the Chiefs with all their All Blacks especially in their backs having scored 41 tries (ave 3.1 per game) are a kak team.

The Lions scoring 21 tries in 13 games at 1.6 per game are one hell of a threat…
