French First Division club Perpignan will make a decision on the playing future of their South African World Cup-winning fullback Percy Montgomery on Thursday.

Rugby 365 reports that the 34-year-old Montgomery, capped 94 times, had signed a season-long contract with the French Top 14 team, but he has been called up into the Springbok squad for the June 7 and 14 Tests against Six Nations Grand Slam-winners Wales, and a one-off game against Italy a week later.

Should Montgomery return to South Africa, he would miss four crunch club games against Auch, Toulouse, Dax and Stade Francais, and also a potential Top 14 semifinal on June 21, a berth in which Perpignan are still very much in the running.

Club president Paul Goze and manager Jacques Brunel held a meeting on Monday with Montgomery, his wife and agent Bruno Xamma.

“The player and the club want to end the season together and in harmony,” Goze said after the talks with Montgomery, who has scored 93 points in the 13 matches he has played for Perpignan.

  • Why is his wife in the meeting?

  • @racheltjiedebeer (Comment 1) : Kinda like a blind person brings a seeing-eye dog. Percy has a thinking-brain wife

Well someone mentioned Yesterday that where he goes will be an indication of who wears the pants in the house. Something about grandchildren and grand parent in Dbn.

I suspect she is there so that she can hear the deal first hand rather than suffer through a game of broken telephone.

  • It would not be a train smash if we didn’t have Monty for the Wales and Italy matches.

Jantjes can play FB and it will be a good gauge to see how he steps up to test rugby.

Against the AB’s we will need Monty though with jantjes coming off the bench IMO.

  • Embarrassing if you ask me. Unless she’s a legal eagle, or have some kind of expertise relevant to the negotiations.
