Willem De Waal on his way to Province

OFM Sport reported on its website that former Vodacom Free State Cheetah fly-half, Willem de Waal, is on his way to Western Province.

De Waal, has been playing rugby for the French second league outfit Narbonne.

It is also a well known fact that De Waal was also on the wish list of Cheetah coach, Naka Drotske.

De Waal was the fly-half when the Cheetahs lifted the Currie Cup in 2005, 2006 and 2007 when both Drotske and former Free State coach Rassie Erasmus were at the helm.

Should De Waal join Province he will be reunited with Erasmus and former Free State fitness trainer Jacques Nienaber. However, it is uncertain if De Waal will be available for this year’s Currie Cup.

De Waal is the second former Cheetah to join Province this month. Former Bok prop Ollie le Roux is already in Cape Town and it is believed that he will wear the Western Province jersey in the Currie Cup after a very successful stint with the Irish club side, Leinster.

To many IMO, but then rassie has made it clear through his actiuons this season that he is not keen on having Dollie in his team.

  • 4 all the talent that Dollie has I just cannot see how in top flight international rugby we can have a flyhalf thats as big if not smaller than Januarie.. Perhaps he proves me wrong..doubt it though..

Now hopefully Peter Grant will throw his toys and decide to go home to the farm (and the Sharks, of course) where his true potential is waiting to be released. He also deserves to smile now and then.

I mean, they’ve only pulled Ackies in as cover when Sykes hasn’t been fit. The message to him, I think, has been pretty clear that the number 4 jersey is his if he wants it.

  • I also agree – that’s why it would be a shock if he were top leave.

Suddenly the Sharks would be screwed at lock – Muller with the Boks, AJ off to WP, Ackers finally retired, Albert on his last legs almost… would leave us with just Hargreaves & Blignaut, & unlike you I am not convinced with them!

At some stage, we need to blood our youngsters. Guys like Hargreaves and Joe Snyman have been in the system for years, without getting any regular senior gametime. How are we going to know if they’re good enough without giving them a run of 5 games to settle?

  • @robdylan (Sharks Forever!) (Comment 24) :

Hargreaves has played quite a few Currie Cup games – I saw quite a lot of him last season & he SUCKED. Rob he is vewry overrated. I know he was Bok u21 captain, but I don’t think he has moved on from that. FFS, he couldn’t even secure ball at the lineout – now that’s sort of important. We all mock De Waal as being nothing more than a CC flyhalf, well I don’t even know if we can say the same about Hargreaves.

By the way, who the hell is Joe Snyman – has he really been on the fringes for a while, cause I saw his name for the first time in a Wildebeest squad this year.

I’m afriad that the Sharks back-up locks sans our old warhorses & Sykes would be amongst the most inferiior in the Currie Cup.

Well I’m afraid you need to take your chances at that level. He cannot be accomodated forever in the hope that “he’ll develop”. You just need to compare his sistuation to Jean Deysel – the latter was still playing u21 rugby last year, but he has taken his opportunities – at S14 level nogals – this season. He may not be a regular starter yet, but he has shown plenty of promise.

Same cannot be said of Ali H, and he’s been hovering around for a good few seasons now.

let’s try again. F^*(*%en internet.

I have said it before and will say it again.

I rate Hargreaves along with that string bean who played for the Stormers, Rob Linde. I did a match or two that he played in in Dbn (Harlequins) and was not impressed then and I haven’t changed my opinion much even though he is no longer a string bean.

Hargreaves is in a similar boat but has a LITTLE more shape to him than Linde had. HArgreaves is still a bit of a spring chicken by lock standards.

Let’s give him a season or two to break into senior rugby proper and gain some bulk and THEN judge his performances.
