Brad benched in Steyn swap

Written by Rob Otto (robdylan)

Posted in :Original Content, Sharks, Super 14 on 22 May 2008 at 13:23

Dick Muir has made a single change to his run-on team for the Super 14 semi-final against the Waratahs on Saturday.

Springbok centre Frans Steyn has been cleared to play and takes over the number twelve jersey from Bradley Barritt. It’s quite frankly a surprising move, given how well the latter performed against the Chiefs. It’s the coach’s call, though and he clearly feels that Steyn and Adi Jacobs are the right partnership to exploit any opportunities the Tahs might present in midfield.

Prop BJ Botha sits out a second consecutive match, with Jannie du Plessis again named at tight head.

The Sharks have also resisted the temptation to bring Tongan wrecking ball Epi Taione straight in at blindside flank. The pack is unchanged from the one that was completely dominant against Ian Foster’s team last week, with Taione coming onto the bench in place of Keegan Daniel.

Here is the side:

15 Stefan Terblanche
14 Odwa Nzuzo Ndungane
13 Adrian Abraham Jacobs
12 Francois Philippus Lodewyk Steyn
11 Jon-Paul Roger Pietersen
10 Ruan Pienaar
9 Rory Michael Kockott

8 Ryan Kankowski
7 Albertus Johannes Venter
6 Louis Jacques Botes
5 Gysbert Johannes Muller (Capt)
4 Steven Robert Sykes
3 Jan Nathaniel du Plessis
2 Bismarck Wilhelm du Plessis
1 Tendai Mtawarira

16 Craig Bruce Burden
17 Pieter-Deon Carstens
18 Phillipus Albertus van den Berg
19 Jean Roy Deysel
20 ‘Epeli Taione
21 Bradley Michael Barritt
22 Waylon Michael Murray

Rob …nobody is sure how Steyn is gonna play…so let him start and take it from there. No use making him an impact player if you’re not sure he’s not going to make any impact.

  • @blackshark N.R.N.S! (Comment 12) : must say, it’s good to see the team back to (virtually) full strength and to have pretty much the ideal bench for such an occasion. Having Al, Epi and Wolla gives you so much bulk and pace to bring on.

Hoping to see a good showing from DC this weekend. He’s been subdued of late.

It is a win-win situation for the Brad-lovers!

If they lose, you can rub it in the faces of those promoting Steyn all season long, and if you win no-one gives a shit because you are in the final!!!

  • It was always a strange phenominon for me supporters.

Sitting millions of miles away from your team or guys you support we somehow think whatever we do, say or think will influence the outcome of the game…

I guess it is the sense of being powerless which makes supporters so nervous, angry and emotional leading up, and during a game.

Strange thing is, it is out of your hands – in fact, I would almost bet that the more support – messages, people at the stadium, puts more pressure on players!!!

    Strange indeed.

  • Purely from a staff management point of view, I think it is a mistake to bench Barritt for Steyn, Steyn is a better impact player anyway. Also a huge mistake to drop Keegan for Epi. Keegan has matured this year, he is not the out of control kid he has been in the past, and he has hardly put a foot wrong for the Sharks this season. He deserves his spot in the semi, and Epi has not earned this, not for the Sharks.

Steyn may be better than Barritt (or not) and Epi may be better thank Keegan, but sometimes team dynamics and psych is more dependent on how players are treated and managed.

  • Rob, I hope we are celebrating a Super 14 Title when we have that beer in a couple weeks.

I worry too, I think both these changes are mistakes. I would have brought Steyn onto the bench in place of Strauss but that is the only change I would have made. I just have to believe the team plays harder if they know the guys that have given their all the entire season are being treated fairly.

  • Plus I believe this is the worst thing for Steyn, it just re-enforces the notion he has that he is “The Man” and that he can do no wrong. He will continue to throw the ball around with reckless abandon and with no regard for his team mates, the team or the supporters. He is an amazing talent, but needs, more than anything to be treated just like any other player. In other words, when coming back from injury, come off the bench in the first game.

Is Dick playing games with the squad announcment to mess with the Tahs?

    Or

What has suddenly happened WRT Dick plying Barritt at 12? I mean when he wasn’t at 12 we didn’t play well and now suddenly that Steyn is fit Barrit is dropped in his favour. (We have been asking for this since round one, why do it NOW?)

don’t take this as me liking Steyn any less BTW
