  • I realise we now have two stories up covering this, but what the hell. It’s a big announcement.

A good squad, although I feel Muller is unlucky. Not really convinced we need all five props, though, but it would have been tough to leave any of them out. Heinke can feel a bit hard-done by, I guess.

  • “Johann Muller is a controversial omission”…unfortunately I fear the bottomline is that 3 choosen locks are better then him.

The Only problems I really have there are Bolla and #46.

Am dissappointed about Muller not making it but there is nothing wrong with Bekker and 4 locks in 30 is a bit of overkill plus Danie can cover at lock IF needed

  • I know he didn’t even make the training squad but I still think Conradie ahead of Vermaak is sin.

Roussouw can count himself very lucky.

But on the whole not a bad squad.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 8) : Bolla is a shocker. Either Vermaak or Kockott deserved it more. In fact, both deserve it more than Pienaar as well.

46 is ok… at least this year it’s on the back of some credible performances and it’s only because Schalk is injured. Would have preferred Baywatch or Botes but Luke is already a Bok… sort of

  • JP didn’t score any tries in the Super 14 but in the last few weeks he seemed to be regaining some form. Against the Tahs he was one of the few Sharks players to perform acceptably.

However he’s the type of player that needs a firecracker up his backside so I fully expect him to come back with a bang. Expect a BEEG CC from him and a return for the Tri nations!

  • Geez, how’s that for a front row – Mujati, Smit, Beast!

Don’t agree with Bolla and Big Joe though – there were plenty of loosies and scrumhalves who played better in the S14. I also suspect that either of the Ndunganes will be found wanting pace-wise if they get a chance at test level.

On the whole, however, a very nice squad for the 1st test of a season.

  • Good Squad and Congratulations to the new caps..I also like that PDV makes it clear the door is still open for Bok places.

11 players of colour 12 if you include #46 not bad at all, are we finally seeing the talent making it to the top…and all on merit too..what a pleasure…bar Bolla though..perhaps this 2nd lease on his Bok career may bring out the best in him.

Add Chillyboy in there and we could have a All Black front row Brilliant! No Schalk Britz either ha-ha think Jake will buy him his ticket now

Danie R is also a bit of a wierd one..I guess he can cover lock and loosie were as Muller can’t.Hienke is very unlucky not to be in either.
I’m confident with this squad we can give Wales and Italy a good lesson in playing the Rugby World Champions!

CJ is a great ball player but still gives away too many penalties for my liking!

Bobo at 13 may be okay against Wales but not good enough to take on NZ and Oz!

Everyone struggled against the Tahs scrum (surprisingly), but at the moment I reckon that Beast and Mujati are our best scrummagers (Jannie du Plessis also), and they were apparently running in those positions in the “shadow” side yesterday.

  • Hmmm, mixed feelings about this.

I feared that another WP-related coach would bring back the Cape cartel, and 10 Cape players seems to indicate this. WP improved a helluva lot, but brilliant enough to justify 10 they were not.

Still, SA has always provided enough talent – even if PDV doesn’t choose the best team in SA, if he chooses the right combinations and tactics, we should be fine.

JPP was a lot better than has been made out, but at his age being dropped will probably be a good thing after last year’s tough season. I just hope PDV remembers that JPP is our only 100kg wing and he is also quick – make sure you don’t cast him aside. The other 3 wings all had better seasons though.

BJ is miles the best prop in SA (until he leaves). Mujati was much better than his WP predeccesors, but that doesn’t make him great. First BJ, then CJ, then Mujati.

Bobo as starting 13? I think not. Has to be either AD or Fransie – Bobo fell off strongly in recent weeks, and although he had a good season, he never looked particularly good.

  • Hey Ice and Rob!!!

I know I’ve been pretty scarce – awfully busy lately; new job, new home, and very active social life since moving our from behind the Boerie curtain.

Rob, I have waited long weeks for Telkom to install my line and activate my DSL line, and that was only done yesterday.

So I finish work and rush off to a joint in Durbanville to buy a modem, and get a D-Link wireless ADSL2 thingamabob.

Turns out the only manual is in freaking unadulterated Bolshevik Russian, and the damn thing refuses to connect to the net. Of course Telkom 24hour support were unable to answer their phones despite me seething silently on the other end for an hour…

Get them this morning, they test the line, change the settings etc – ultimately direct me to the supplier to test on their line cos they don’t know whats wrong.

So now the saga continues, and I still don’t know when I will be able to make my charge up the Comments Hall of Fame.

    I hate Telkom!!!

Oh, and I didn’t get a voicemail, sorry.

  • basically, PDV reckons JP is f*cked from playing too much rugby over the last 12 months, so he’s going to be on an intensive re-conditioning program.

As for the Nations Cup, as predicted, the big five are holding out on releasing their players.

I would presume that they would then be basing their perceptions on what happened in the Currie Cup last year when Plumtree was the coach. I honestly cant imagine that he (Plumtree) had already started taking charge while they were busy with the Super 14 and he was working under Dick. From what I can remember Plumtree was well liked and respected last year.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 149) : yeah – I think so too, but he was definitely only caretaker last year. He will definitely have a different view on what works and what players he rates to what Dick did… but perhaps if there were undercurrents that started to surface last year, tey would now be coming to the surface.

It’s all speculation, of course. And starting a rumour is the easiest thing in the world

Hmmmm, finally someone that agrees with me about Mujati. He is not a very good prop, does not scrum very well and does absolutely NOTHING in other facets of play. A joke that he makes it ahead of Jannie.

As for Bobo, he really did have a good Super 14 this year, his pace should be questioned, but he did play well this year, and I suppose deserves his spot in the 30. He does have good hands.

Heinke is a loosehead, Mujati is a tighthead. In my opinion, the looseheads should be Beast and Heinke, and the tightheads should be Jannie and BJ. CJ can cover both sides.

  • Gurthro is worthless, and I have been saying this since last year. He is a very poor scrummager, simply relying on his strength. Very poor technique and tends to set up much too high.

Actually I agree completely with that Hmmm. I will say this, Beast has become a very good scrummager this season, not up to the level of Heinke yet, but his improvement over last year is amazing. It is still hard to believe he has only been playing prop for 3 years having moved there from loosie.

We’re just getting ourselves more worked up about Mujati Hmmm, it still sickens me. I can guarantee you that if he had stayed with the Lions, with Heinke in the front row with him, he would have looked a lot better since he would not be going backwards quite so fast (thanks to help from Heinke), but I can assure you that if he was playing better with the Lions, he would not have been selected. Mujati is a WP press selection in my opinion!

Agree that Baywatch is a better choice at 6. But yes, Loooook was selected as a 6 PdV said as much, he said that both Kanko and Spies would only play 8, Roussow and Big Joe would be utility loosies, Juan specialist 7, and Loooook specialist 6.

  • As someone who ACTUALLY WATCHED the Stormers LIVE at Newlands i totally disagree Hmmm and DB.

Mujati has been a revelation this year. Any oke who can hold his own while scrumming next to Brits and the mighty Schalk Ferreira needs to be applauded.

The Stormers scrum was very steady when JD Moller was in the side. Once he got injured the front row struggled big time.

Jannie Dup did absolutely nothing this season.

As for Heinke, i thought the job of a prop is more than just scrumming???

Robd (Our resident prop expert) please can you confirm?

  • @wpw (YNWA) (Comment 185) : I rate Mujati more highly than DB does… agree that anyone who could stop that Stormers scrum back-peddling as to have something. I reckon Fondse had a lot to do with it as well, coupled with a bit of good coaching.

As for Jannie – he’s been great the last few games. Heinke is abysmal in open play but is a superb scrummaging prop. I wonder why he plays loosehead instead of tight.

BTW, Dancing Bear has forgotten more about props than I will ever know in my life, so I would take his opinion far more seriously than mine! I have never actually played in the front row.
