Januarie in the dock

Details are sketchy, but it appears that Bok scrumhalf Ricky Januarie might miss the first test against Wales for disciplinary reasons.

Apparently all will be revealed at a press conference this afternoon, but a report on Keo suggests that Ricky has done something pretty bad and risks being withdrawn from the team for Saturday’s game, if not the entire squad.

This would presumably mean either Ruan Pienaar or (horror!) Bolla Conradie would wear the number 9 jersey against the Welsh.

More details as we get them.

  • Even though i don’t think Bolla should start i just don’t understand how Ruan can play based on his crap form the WHOLE season.

Vermaak would have been a better bet.

    Januarie ‘issue’ rocks Boks

    by Gavin Rich | 05 June 2008 (10:27)

Disciplinary reasons may rule scrumhalf Ricky Januarie out of the Springbok team for Saturday’s first test match against Wales in Bloemfontein.
The Bok management have confirmed that an issue surrounding Januarie will be discussed at the team announcement press conference at lunch-time on Thursday. However, they denied rumours that the Stormers scrumhalf had already been sent home.

They were also unable to confirm whether the “issue” would rule Januarie out of the match, with communications manager Chris Hewitt saying he would prefer to leave all comment up to coach Peter de Villiers.

If Januarie is sent home or is ruled out of the match, Bolla Conradie or Ruan Pienaar will be in line to replace him. Januarie has been in excellent form this season and if he was ruled out it would be a big blow to the Boks.

  • I’m surprised Januarie is in trouble.

His disciplinary record is actually quite clean.

  • My lasting memory of Januarie playing for the Lions was a match where he was over the try-line to score, then tried to goose-step or something and he lost control of the ball. Didn’t like the idiot much after that.

  • Januarie suspended for disciplinary infraction

    by Gavin Rich | 05 June 2008 (10:27)

The Springbok build-up to Saturday’s opening test against Wales at Vodacom Park was rocked on Thursday by the suspension of scrumhalf Ricky Januarie for a disciplinary infraction.

Coach Peter de Villiers, in announcing Januarie’s one match suspension, said he was not going to comment further on what Januarie did. He said the matter had been dealt in an in-house manner and that it would remain private.

However, when rumours of Januarie’s omission first emerged on Thursday morning, the talk was that it was drink related.

“Ricky broke our team protocol and ethical code so he has been disciplined internally and suspended for one match,” said De Villiers.

“He is not leaving Bloemfontein, he is remaining with the team, and will be part of our plans again on Sunday when we start preparing for the match in Pretoria.”

Bolla Conradie, the Stormers reserve scrumhalf, will replace Januarie in the starting team for the Bloemfontein test, with Ruan Pienaar getting a late call to sit on the bench.

Papsak at a formal dinner seems to be frowned upon

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 39) : Pienaar getting a late call to sit on the bench? So Bolla would have been the number 20…

Guys, I see what’s happening here. DeV is resting virtually all the Sharks guys cos he reckons they’re tired. Adi is the only exception, since he had virtually no S14 game time anyway.

Now why doesn’t he just come out and say that?
