  • Early on Thursday morning, a rumour emerged regarding Januarie’s rowdy behaviour at the team dinner on Wednesday evening. The Bok management confirmed there was a disciplinary issue with Januarie, who has since been replaced by Bolla Conradie in the starting side.

  • Not many Sharks (especially as we can no longer call Butch, Percy and John Sharks)!

Glad for Adi. Think Beast deserved a shot. Don’t like Bolla at all.

Think Frans should have at least been on the bench.

  • Andries Bekker and Brian Mujati earn their first caps ahead of veterans Victor Matfield and CJ van der Linde. Adi Jacobs is also entrusted with a start while Frans Steyn, who kicked the winning points in Paris, does not feature in the matchday 22. The magic boot of Montgomery will only be utilised in the second half meaning James will take on the primary goal-kicking responsibility.

I’m sure the last thing he wanted to do was field a JAKE XV.

Well…most of the guys actually deserve a crack…hopefully they’ll reward the coach with good performances on the day.

Ruan, Steyn, CJ, Gurthro and Adi at 13 is probably a gamble… rather against Wales than against the All Blacks.

  • I think its a shocking team.

So 8 months later and all of a sudden 15 of the best 22 rugby players in the world are suddenly not good enough?

Kanko doesnt even make the bench? Thats lunacy esp as Spies has only played 2 games in 12 months!

    Bolla?

No kicker? James has kicked 3 times in the Guinness Premiership this year. Three times…

This side bears a close resemblance to a Fantasy Rugby side where he filled in some positions with shitty players because he didnt have enough money to buy decent ones.

I’m more than a little disappointed that after months of preparation and sound bites this is what de villiers has delivered.

A real poespas team… to transalte for those who think I have a diryt mouth – poespas means mengelmoes…

This side really resembles a throw-together side and shows zero planning and foresthought.

What the hell happens when Butch gets injured and, forget about ahvign a specialist kicker, all of a sudden we have absolutely no kicker!

Totally agree with you. We would get a huge klap if this team started Tri Nations. Test rugby is about taking your points on offer and goalkicking is VITALLY important.

PDV is naive if he thinks we can run any team of their feet. Remember Harry Viljoen tried this approach (when the Boks were not allowed to kick at all) and look at his record. We should still beat the Welsh but agreed that is coz we still have better players. I think it could be close though.

As much as I’m a HUGE fan of Spies, I would have started with Kanko and used Spies as an impact player. He is still regaining his form.

WPW…they probably all deserve their place in the squad but 7 starting…that is too many!!

    Percy at 15
Fourie at 13 (0r Steyn if Adi doesn’t take his chances)
Januarie at 9 (if FDP is still injured)
Kanko at 8 is a MUST (with the Steroids freak on the bench)
    Schalk at 6
    Matfield at 5
BJ at 3 with Mujati/CJ on the bench

    Gotto love this shit!

Danie covers both lock and flank, as does Vic since he played flank in France!

Pienaar covering 9, 10 and wing

    Bolla covering himself…

Grant can play 12 too, and he is a kicker, as is Percy.

Kanko will play in PTA which is a bit dof since its Pierre’s home ground.

And a bloody strong bench, same scenario as we had in the WC against Tonga – give the B-side a run and if the shit hits the fan, bring the insurance policies on.

  • Why risk playing a frickin ‘B squad’ in your 1st test in charge and as World Champs nogaal..no screw this I was going to be diplomatic about my views on the squad but I do’t understand the logic here.

PS: I will be the 1st one to eat humble pie if this teams plays a good game on Sat and wins. Still it won’t excuse selecting a scrummie that has hardly started at his Province and the best loose forward in SA at present not even in the 22.

Thanks for that Walter very interesting ….. White was left with a very inexperienced selection of players to chose from as a result of the Strauli legacy and conversely De Villiers has been left with some very experienced players as a result of White’s conservative selection policy but despite the fact that there is no continuity in the pairings, a potential problem with kicking which may result in a player having to come off the bench and there are some questionable selections this is not as bad a team as some posters would have us believe.

  • Couple of things:

Bolla wouldn’t have been there were it not for this “discipline issue” with Ricky. I’m interested to see what that’s all about. That said, I would much rather have started with Ruan seeing as Rory is not in the squad.

Kanko is being rested, isn’t he?

One thing I agree on is the lack of a truly consistent kicker.

In that case, the only real problems I have with the team are Steenkamp over Beast or CJ and Bolla over just about anyone else.

  • Gaving Rich on Supersport:

“Springbok coach Peter de Villiers named the team everyone expected him to on Thursday, and then delivered what some of the experienced players can regard as a chilling warning ahead of the new international season.

“There is a time to come and a time to go. I am looking to the next four years, and some people may find that their time to go is earlier than expected,” said De Villiers.

This was after naming a team which excluded stalwarts Percy Montgomery, Victor Matfield and CJ van der Linde from the starting team for the first match against Wales here in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

In all, there were 10 changes to the side that won the World Cup final against England, with not one single combination being retained from that match in Paris. The same can be said for the last team that played under Jake White’s tenure, the convincing win over Wales in Cardiff last November.

As anticipated, Montgomery is replaced by Conrad Jantjes, with Matfield and Van der Linde losing out to two further Stormers players, Andries Bekker and Brian Mujati. Bekker and Mujati are the only new caps in the team, although Adrian Jacobs is back in the midfield after an absence of five years.

With Ricky Januarie being suspended for a disciplinary infraction, Bolla Conradie also comes back for his first Test match since 2005.

A notable omission from the squad is the talented Francois Steyn, which is quite startling if you consider how well Steyn played at last year’s World Cup and his enormous utility value. At the very least you would have imagined that he would be a certainty on the bench.

Another player with utility value, Ruan Pienaar, was also set to miss out, but was recalled when Januarie was suspended.

While De Villiers seemed to be indicating with his comments that the experienced Boks were being phased out, he did also emphasise the enormous value that Matfield had brought to the squad, adding that the big lock had probably made more of a contribution as an outsider than he would have had he been on the playing field.

Luke Watson gets a chance to add to his one cap, earned against Wales last year, by playing in the place of the injured Schalk Burger. “

  • Kevin Putt(-putt) …

Also had a NZ sevens player representing Natal Duikers on wing back in ’92, name was Jason Goldsmith – was in frame to line-up for the senior Natal team before he suffered a season-ending broken leg, & he returned to NZ… think he ended his career playing in Hong Kong/Japan.
