France pick weakened squad for Aus tour

French coach Marc Livremont has announced a rag-tag 26-man squad for his side’s tour of Australia.

The non-availability of players involved in the semi-finals of the French domestic league have severely limited the options available to the coach and the squad contains 12 newcomers to test rugby. Loose forward Sebastian Chabal has been recalled after missing out on selection for the 6 Nations, after an average World Cup campaign.

The French are hoping that the youngsters blooded on this tour will form the backbone of their assault on the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand. Assistant coach Emile Ntamack told Rugbyheaven that “All these new players will have nothing to lose. We are going to Australia to win but whatever the results there will be no lynching”.

The coach’s younger brother, Mathieu Livremont, will captain the side. Who said nepotism was dead in the professional era?

French Squad:

Forwards: Sebastien Bruno, Benjamin Kayser, Lionel Faure, Pierre Correia, Benoit Lecouls, Renaud Boyoud, Lionel Nallet (captain), David Couzinet, Sebastien Chabal, Louis Picamoles, Imanol Harinordoquy, Fulgence Ouedraogo, Mathieu Lievremont, Yannick Caballero.

Backs: Dimitri Yachvili, Sebastien Tillous-Bordes, Francois Trinh-Duc, Benjamin Boyet, Damien Traille, Thibault Lacroix, Maxime Mermoz, Benjamin Thiery, Jean-Baptiste Peyras, Alexis Palisson, David Janin, Pepito Elhorga.

  • Born a bastard child to a french prostitue and a Lithuanian door knob salesmen, Chabel quickly realised that neither of the family business’s were his cup of tea.

Early years were spent spear hunting small game in the mountains next to his village, in which on one particularly cloudy day a large storm hit and Chabel was forced to hide in a cave until the storm passed. 3 days later the storm was still strong and Chabel was forced to eat the raw meat of the goat he had caught days early; once he had the taste of the goats blood, he was addicted, and knew he could no longer go back to civilisation. By age 11, Chabel sported a bushy beard and hair to his hips, he became known to the villagers as “the mountain creature”.

Hearing of this, the coach of the La’chapellea Vikings captured Chabel in hopes of using him as the team mascot. It was quickly realised that Chabels talents could be put to better use, and Chabel was capped in his first match. And well, the rest is history ……………

  • Most people fear the Grim Reaper. Chabal considers him “a promising Talent”

Some people ask for a Kleenex when they sneeze, Sebastien Chabal asks for a body bag.

In a fight between superman and the spiderman, Chabal won.

When Bruce Banner gets mad, he turns into the Hulk. When the Hulk gets mad, he turns into Sebastien Chabal.

Before each French match Sebastien Chabal is injected with fourteen times the lethal dose of rhino tranquilzer. This is, of course, to limit his strength and mobility, in an attempt to lower the fatality rate of the other players.

Chabal actually started his sporting career in american football but the NFL couldn’t make padding thick enough to protect the others so he had to come play a proper sport.

Seb Chabal is so hard that he once coughed up a diamond.

  • Eh..I am going to refrain from complaining too much since Top 14 isn’t over yet so his selection was somewhat limited which is why we are seeing a heavy selection from France’s not so top teams.

Also some of the bigger names have either played for just about a year straight (JBE et Jauzion) or out due to injury (Clerc, Poitrenaud et Heymans). However I am completely thrilled for Max’s inclusion in the squad, he’s definitely a player I’ve got my eye on for future greatness. I am very excited for Toulouse’s season next year when Fred is back because I think Max and Fred could be as devasting as Fred & Clément or Fred & Vincent.
