Liebenberg stories seem to be porky pies

Western Province hooker Tiaan Liebenberg is furious over reports that he has signed a contract to play for the French rugby club Toulon.

Stephen Nell writes in Die Burger that what makes it worse, is assumptions that he wants to move because he is not regarded as WP’s first-choice hooker.

Liebenberg has set high standards of professionalism since he joined the union and he fears the speculations of the past week could put him in a poor light,

“I have had an offer from Toulon but I have not made any decision. I certainly have not signed anything,” he said on Tuesday.

“I also want to make it clear that I have never said I am unhappy about not being the No 1 hooker at WP.

“My contract with WP expires in October but renewing it will certainly be a consideration.

“The last thing I want is an image of being a prima donna. I’ll fight for my place,” he said, adding that nobody had spoken to him before writing a newspaper report.

Liebenberg and his good friend Schalk Brits took turns to play for the Stormers in the Super 14 competition earlier this year.

Liebenberg started the season well, but he was hampered by injuries. He is, at the moment, recovering from a knee injury.

“I have never been under the impression that there is a No 1 or No 2 hooker at Western Province,” he said.

“It has always been a case of the one who is playing the best rugby at the time or who is best suited to a pattern for a certain match being given the opportunity to play.

“Whether I am No 1 or No 2, I always do my best. I am 150 per cent committed to giving my best to WP.”

  • How can he be 150pc committed to WP (which is quite a feat in itself) and still be considering an offer in France?

Most players really aren’t worth listening to nowadays, all we get is rehashed cliches and rubbish.

  • @Flashman (Comment 3) :

You’d be a blind fool not to keep an open contractual mind…

I’d be peeved too… he is the next best test hooker behind Bismark…

  • @Villie (Comment 9) : seems to be old news that… He played a few pre-sesaon games for them but was obviously sent back, since he didn’t make their Super 14 squad this year
