Australia’s 1991 World Cup winner Ewen McKenzie will be the new Stade Francais coach for next season as a replacement to Fabien Galthie, the reigning French champions said on Thursday.

News 24 reports that the 42-year-old McKenzie, Australia’s most capped prop, will be the sole head coach.

He had been assistant coach of ACT Brumbies for three years and of the 1999 Australia World Cup winning team. Since 2004 he has been coach to the Waratahs, who reached the Super 14 final this season.

  • And Tigers chairman Peter Toms admitted the massive interest in the position from around the world has meant that it could take longer to make an appointment.

He told The Leicester Mercury: “This is one of the biggest rugby clubs in Europe and when a senior position at Leicester Tigers becomes available, it will always attract a lot of interest because we have a high profile and a record of success.

“Since the announcement a week ago that we were looking to appoint a new head coach, there has been a massive amount of interest and we have received a large number of inquiries.

“We are in the process of arranging to see a number of the candidates, though this can take some time.”
