Odwa gets a start against Italy

Frans Steyn is at flyhalf as the Bok side to take on Italy is named.

Sharks wing Odwa Ndungane is the only new cap as he comes straight into the number 14 jersey. Conrad Jantjes, Jean de Villiers and Ricky Januarie all keep their positions after last week’s win over Wales, while Gcobani Bobo and Steyn come in at outside centre and flyhalf respectively.

There are a number of changes in the forwards. BJ Botha makes way for a fit-again CJ van der Linde at tighthead prop, while Bismarck du Plessis starts at hooker. Regular skipper John Smit is not available for this match, meaning the captaincy goes to lock Victor Matfield. The only other change to the pack is at eighthman, where Ryan Kankowski gets a start. Luke Watson is again named at open side flank.

There are five forwards on the bench, including loosies Joe van Niekerk and Schalk Burger.

Here is the team:

15. Conrad JANTJES
14. Odwa NDUNGANE
13. Gcobani BOBO
12. Jean DE VILLIERS
11. Bryan HABANA
10. Francois STEYN
9. Ricky JANUARIE
8. Ryan KANKOWSKI
7. Juan SMITH
6. Luke WATSON
5. Victor MATFIELD (c)
4. Bakkies BOTHA
3. CJ VAN DER LINDE
2. Bismarck DU PLESSIS
1. Tendai MTAWARIRA

16. Schalk BRITS
17. Brian MUJATI
18. Andries BEKKER
19. Joe VAN NIEKERK
20. Schalk BURGER
21. Peter GRANT
22. Ruan PIENAAR

Hopefully Kanko can score 9 tries and redeem this non event

  • A bit weird really… but a meaningless game all the same…

-would have had JP in there (not sure about Odwa being a test player), perhaps rested Brian…

    - may have well as had Adi in there for another start with JDV…

    - given Juan a rest which would have made space for Joe starting and made space for Bobo on the bench…

    - rested Bakkies, brought in Muller or Danie…

    - Gurthro needs game time too…

IMO Adi was lucky to have added to his 6 or so caps in the first place, if I never see him in green again it will be too soon, only place for Adi is on a piece of wood waiting for the last 10 minutes in a Shark match that has already been won.
Agree that Joe could have started ahead of Whatsin.

  • Good team! Mallet and he’s Versace team are in for one looooooooong afternoon.

Happy to see Steyn get a start but it won’t prove much as its a weak side so he is in a no win situation. Can’t see why Grant would feel agrieved as Steyn is the senior player here and should have the inside track, saying that I’d like to see him get a run at 10 with Steyn at inside center at some stage.

Other than that this team will grow in confidence and some WILL be eating their words as I firmly believe we are going to run NZ/Aus very close and most likely come away with 1 or 2 wins on the road.

    BOKKE!

  • @MysticShark (Comment 2) :

Is Odwa the best wing available?

    Question…

    Steyn has what kicking average?

Is he not like the 7th choice kicker for the Sharks? Who pulled a Chris Rossouw and missed kicks from straight in front?

How can we consider Steyn as a serious contender for 10 if he is not a good kicker? We can only play Percy for so many games still…

And no, you do not have to take conversions for tries from the halfway line – it is perfectly acceptable to take them from the 22 too.

6N and Grand Slam winners beaten is a good start. Azzuri is good for continuing the boost for the players and putting some finer touches to the game plan.

So “Piet Snoor could not have wished for an easier beginning to his coaching career”, no. But it is the near ideal preparation.

  • Look the team is sufficient to beat the opposition its facing but whether it helps our build up to the 3N is very debatable.

I have serious doubts that Steyn is anywhere near ready for the Bok 10 but we won’t know that after Saturday because they could play the Collegians 6th team fly-half and he would look good against the opposition. I believe De Villiers is wrong just taking what Steyn wants and giving to him. I believe Steyn, after the Super 14 he has had should prove his worth at 12 and then when he has shown a cool head then we can talk 10.

I don’t believe Bobo is Bok quality and we have a serious shortage of Bok quality wings in this country.

  • @Dive Pass (Comment 64) : Re Steyn, the debate could rage for hours and still not be conclusive Steyn is one of the most talented rugby players that SA has unearthed for a least this decade. However like any precocious talent he has not got the temperament to go with it. It started well he was humble and shy. Unfortunately a small town boy trust onto the World stage has gone to his head. He is like any youngster ( I have two of my own) he will throw a tantrum unless he gets what he wants.
Piet Snoor has recapitulated to his demands to play at 10. I fear that this may be to his detriment now. Sure he will have a blinder against Mullets under strength Ities but IMO it will not prepare him for the rigours that await.
Until he matures his best position is No.15…. or 12, or 13 but not 10!

  • @MorneN (Comment 33) : OK, I can’t believe I have to defend Steyn on his kicking, but your comment is a bit over the top Morne. It has been a very long time since Steyn has started a game as the 1st choice kicker. His role at both the Boks and Sharks wrt kicking for goal is to take the most difficult long shots, and yes, his percentage is poor, what would you expect. Even taking those easy conversions can get a little harder when you are expected to step up and kick them without having kicked a single shot and you’re in the 78th minute. Just not a fair comparieson to look at his kicking percentage. I am not saying he is going to kick well on Saturday, but give him a chance and let’s just see how he does when entrusted with the kicking responsibility from the first minute. Everyone wants to give guys like Mujati more chances, but don’t even want to give Steyn one chance to prove he can be a first choice kicker. He may kick terribly, but certainly deserves the chance, especially against this Italian outfit.

  • @MorneN (Comment 55) : How can he prove he is an able backup to Butch in the kicking department if you won’t give him a chance to prove it on Saturday? I argued for Steyn’s benching with the Sharks, I think he has a lot to learn, but if he is going to be considered as Bok 10 and kicker, then he not only deserves, but needs this opportunity on Saturday to see if he can be a first choice kicker. But he has not had that opportunity with either the Sharks or Boks for a couple of years at least.

I think the point some of the guys are trying to make is even if he has a blinder against Italy, it doesn’t mean that he can be considered as 10 for the All Blacks. If PdV wanted to experiment like this, perhaps do it against stronger competition (like Wales?)

  • @walter van transvaal.co.za (Comment 111) : Walter, I can certainly see your and others points, but remember he is being considered as 10 backup for the All Blacks, there is no way Butch is not first choice at this point. I think that the Italians are a fine choice to give him the chance to be first choice kicker, a little less pressure, remember he hasn’t been first choice kicker in years. Believe me, I am no rabid Steyn supporter, but clearly he has oodles of talent, and really has never been given the opportunity at either the Sharks or Boks to kick for goal consistently. How can we ever know if he can do it if he is not given that chance. The problem with a young guy making it to the very top so early in his career is that he is never given the chance to hone his skills at the provincial level, and Steyn is a perfect example of this. He is physically, an amazing athlete, big, strong, fast, and he has so much rugby talent, but he is terribly raw. My ideal choice would have been to send him back to the Sharks to play 10 in every CC game this season and go from there.

That coupled with the fact that the Currie Cup season coincides with the heart of my sailing racing season makes it even more difficult to find the time. I race my Laser on Tuesday, the Esse on Wednesday nights, the J24 on Thursday nights, several boats on Friday nights and several different boats on the weekends. So the only evening I have off is Monday. I spend ALL my free time watching rugby to keep up with the weekly matches.

  • DB,

I cannot believe that I have to defend myself because you defended Steyn and I was not even attacking the dude – just stating the obvious.

Answer me two things – yes we are playing Italy but since when has test rugby become a finishing school for players?

Mujati had good form in the Super 14, so did Chavanga, they tanked in test rugby and it proved they are not ready. But at least there was a point of reference to give them a shot, being S14 form.

Steyn is not a first choice kicker, not even in his own province, so what point of reference have we got here?

Second question; Show me, or explain how in hell Steyn deserves a shot at 10 ahead of Grant? Based on what?

And no, the ‘great talent’ and ‘promise’ argument dont sit well with me. He has not proved one thing in a #10 jersey to suggests he deserves a shot ahead of Grant.

Grant in his limited performances which to me were still average proved more than Steyn did, or did not, since he made his debut to wear the #10 jersey – not 12, not 15, 10!

Forget kicking averages even, just debate this purely on who is currently the best back-up to Butch on logic.

“Up until now Peter de Villiers (Bok coach), Ian McIntosh (selector) and Peter Jooste, (Convenor of selectors during the Jake White era) have continued as selectors and helped De Villiers pick his first official training squad of his tenure – currently gathered in Somerset West.

This will however, come to and end, as along with De Villiers three other candidates must be selected to make up a four-man national selection panel.”
