Another Cheetah-Bok to go?

Springbok prop CJ van der Linde could be lost to South African rugby, a report has claimed.

The Afrikaans Sunday newspaper Sondag reported that Van der Linde could quit the country for an overseas contract and asked for a private chat with Springbok coach Peter de Villiers this week to try and find a way of staying in South Africa, according to news24.

De Villiers has already lured Bok captain John Smit, lock Victor Matfield and fullback Percy Montgomery back to South Africa and also negotiated a return for flyhalf Butch James. Van der Linde, who played his 50th Test match against Italy on Saturday at Newlands, has reportedly been seriously considering offers from European clubs but first wanted to talk to the Bok coach before making a decision.

The report said Van der Linde will sign for a club in Europe next week, unless a compromise can be found which will keep him in South Africa.

  • @Oranje Orakel (Comment 1) : He’s not a very good prop anyway :-)

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : Gives away too many penalties for my liking and has never convinced me he’s a great scrummager. His best asset is his workrate!

  • To be quite honest, there is not a better prop to wear the 17 jersey for the Boks. He can be dynamic when he comes on, and he scrums decently (not great) on both sides of the scrum. There is nobody in SA that really comes close to fitting this bill other than Deon Carstens, with Mujati a distant third. We may think he is not a very good prop or gives away too many penalties, but just think about the Bok match day 22 and how much weaker it is without one of the three props being able to play on both sides. At least he is going about this the right way, talking to PdV and trying to work out a way to stay in SA BEFORE signing a contract overseas.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 4) : Agree that he is a valuable member of the Bok match day 22. he is also experienced and we don’t have many props with 50 Boks caps. So I wouldn’t want to lose him.

  • Must say, I can’t figure out how he got to 50. I reckon at least 30 of them are Ollie-caps

  • I reckon it could be a good thing for him to join a really good forward based club for a season or two… he’ll come back as a far more polished prop and even more devastating for the Boks…

Perhaps SARU should send a few more of our props over…
