The Boland Kavaliers suffered a huge setback on Wednesday when their captain and hooker Conrad Burke was ruled out for three months with a torn pectoral muscle.
Burke was injured shortly before he ran 40 metres for the winning try against the Valke at Brakpan last weekend which gave the Kavaliers a 48-42 victory.
Boland coach Deon Davids said Burke’s injury is a big blow and that he will be missed in the next couple of weeks.
In his absence Clemen Lewis will wear the No 2 jersey with experienced centre Piet van Zyl takes over the captaincy.
Hardworking flanker and Sevens Springbok Zolano Mofu returns to the side of the scrum after a successful tour with Chester Williams’ side to the Nations Cup tournament in Romania.
Davids also opted to retain young Jean Botha at loosehead prop and will start with strongman Janro van Niekerk on the bench.
The Boland team is:
Justin Peach, John Daniels, Piet van Zyl (capt), Lionel Cornelius, Alvin Hugo, Elgar Watts, Marnus Hugo, Dries van Schalkwyk, Frankie Horne, Zolani Mofu, Coenie Basson, Cecil Kemp, Andries Human, Clemen Lewis, Jean Botha. Replacements: Pieter Wium, WP Nel, Janto van Niekerk, Frikkie Spies, Angelo Brinkhuys, Neil Papier, Deon Scholtz. – SapaTweet
