Coach Eugene Eloff has retained the Xerox Lions side that lost 21-7 to the Blue Bulls for Saturday’s Currie Cup match against the Free State Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.

With concerns over the fitness of Rayno Benjamin, Dusty Noble has been bracketed in at wing, but the rest of the starting team shows no changes.

On the bench, Anton van Zyl too is not a certainty after returning from injury and Justin Wheeler has been placed on standby.

In Benjamin’s case, should he fail a fitness test and Noble start, Louis Strydom will take his place on the bench.

Lions:

Earl Rose, Louis Ludik, Jaco Pretorius, Walter Venter, Rayno Benjamin / Dusty Noble, Jaco van Schalkwyk, Jano Vermaak, Willem Alberts, Franco van der Merwe , Cobus Grobbelaar (capt.), Gerhard Mostert, Dewald Senekal, JC Janse van Rensburg, Willie Wepener, Heinke van der Merwe. Replacements: Ethienne Reynecke, Gert Muller, Anton van Zyl / Justin Wheeler, Wilhelm Koch, Chris Jonck, Jannie Boshoff, Louis Strydom / Dusty Noble.

  • The Cheaters have a very strong side.

Oh, and they happen to have a decent flyhalf and wingers who can actually catch the ball.

  • Hahaha

    Sorry Walter.

I really wouldn’t mind the Lions beating the Cheaters btw.

The more games the Cheaters lose the better.

  • @Hmmm (Comment 8) :

I asked Loffie after the game on Saturday if we can expect any changes, and he said he hasn’t really got anyone else to pick…

I’m not so sure about that, I would have had Strydom on the bench against the Bulls and would have given him a chance early in the game

    I don’t know hey….Strydom has not done much…
Don’t think he would have made a dif in the Bulls game…

  • Walter

I believe there’s hardly any young ‘up and coming’ players from the Lions to represent the SA age group teams.

What is happening to all the good young talented players?

But I guess he is right…who else!??!

I think our problem is 3/10/11/13…
And Vermaak needs to jack up his performance…and stop standing around and admiring everyone…

  • Hopefully he has learnt a few tricks over there, and he is experienced, so lets hope he makes an impact.

I agree…I really liked Seppie when he partnered Willie in the front row…they were a great combo…not just for the LIONS/Cats but for the Bokke too…they were the only highlight of the Bokke side at times back then…whether scrummiging or general play…they were both good drivers of the ball…

  • But when Willie retired Seppie did too (well mentally that is)…and I am not gonna act like I know what went wrong there…but he lost all his form when he lost his front row partner…

Lets hope he can have a similar partnership with Heinke….
