All Blacks prop Greg Somerville will join Gloucester on a two-and-a-half year contract in December after agreeing a move from the Crusaders.

Report courtesy News24.

A fierce scrummager, Somerville can play as a loosehead or a tighthead and has 59 caps for New Zealand.

“The market is now making players of Greg’s experience, calibre and undoubted expertise available and once we appreciated his interest and desire to add significantly to our squad, we were thrilled to sign him,” coach Dean Ryan told gloucesterrugby.co.uk.

He added: “To have represented the All Blacks in more than 50 Test matches and be versatile to operate on either side of the scrum, means he is an outstanding acquisition for us at this stage of his career.

“With the likes of Christian Califano and Patrice Collazo leaving the club, we needed an option that could benefit us long-term and we have managed to combine experience, versatility and expertise in one package and that is fantastic for the club.”

Somerville, 30, who will play out the remainder of his current side’s domestic season before arriving at Kingsholm, added: “I have achieved virtually everything possible in New Zealand rugby and to have represented the All Blacks will always be something very special to me.

“But this opportunity has developed and the chance to experience a new culture for myself and my family, and contribute to a side that is already right at the top of the English Premiership was an exciting opportunity to take up.

“I am looking forward to contributing to Dean Ryan’s side and proving myself in different conditions and against different opponents. Gloucester’s front row options are already very talented and I am looking forward to adding to that mix next season.”

  • @robdylan (Comment 1) : No Doubt that they will begin rebuilding now, the Cantbrians are a proactive and professional outfit, they run their rugby like a business and have been the most successful union in NZ, their results speak for themselves.
Sure they will not be the same team next year, but they should never be written off. A month in Rugby as in politics is a long time, 9 months is even longer :!:
Provided that they can retain the nucleus of the younger players and Richie, they will be okay. Wayne Smith is a good backup for Robbie Deans.

  • @robdylan (Comment 4) : Rob hope you are right but still think that the will be in the shakeup next year.
As much as it grieves me to say this at this early stage I think that the Stormers will be in the top 4 and probably at the Sharks expense.
It is very early doors and a lot can happen but the Tahs, Chiefs ( nice young side without too many superstars) Stormers will be in the top 3 with Sharks, Bulls, Saders, scrapping for the 4th Spot.
    All conjecture at this stage.

  • You guys are missing the bigger picture here….we are potentially seeing the beginning of the end of the Super 14 being the best quality rugby tournament outside of the RWC, the 3N and the 6N. New Zealand is taking a serious assault from European rugby clubs.

They are trying the “sabbatical” allowance to star players like Carter and have given McCaw that option. But if the pressure continues with the numbers of players at their prime that are going at the moment they will have to select overseas players for the All Blacks and then it’s straight Pound/Euro vs Kiwi Dollar and the loser is going to be the Super 14.

  • @robdylan (Comment 7) : True, last years tour was almost inhuman, the Stormers have a long one ahead of them as do the Bulls.
Talking about Jon coming back which is good news, I hope that we can retain Bismark and Jannie, with BJ off to Ireland we would not want to lose him and Jannie. What is the latest with Butch;is he going back to Bath?
I suppose it is way too early for all the speculation, but if Brian van Zyl is also heading off we need to have some contingency plans in place.

  • @Dive Pass (Comment 8) : Therefore there should be an extended competition that has been muted, having a conference type tournament played simultaneously in the UK, rest of Europe, the Pacific, NZ, Aus ,SA and the Americas with a super league coming from the top 2 teams from each conference.

If rumors are correct Bismark has some game time clause in his contract…permitting form…and that is the delay in finalising John!??!

    Rob can you confirm!??!

Bismarck was in the RWC and 3N last year, having played one CC game and played behind Smit in the 2007 S14. I don’t think anyone doubts his ability.

But he has been, for the past 12 months, sharing the duties with John at the Boks, and is at worst number 2, so he has not lost out to anyone, despite playing second fiddle to John in 2007.

  • Judge shatters Mrs Dalton’s dreams of luxury
    Zelda Venter
    June 26 2008 at 01:27PM

Andrea Dalton, wife of former Springbok hooker James Dalton, won’t get the R43 000 a month maintenance she wanted from her estranged husband.

Instead, she will have to make do with R15 000 a month and a 2004 Hyundai Matrix car, the Pretoria high court ruled on Thursday.

Andrea wanted R43 000 maintenance a month, pending the finalisation of their divorce, as she felt she was entitled to the lavish lifestyle she was used to during their five-year marriage.

Andrea complained bitterly that she had to live with her mother in the latter’s tiny home, while Dalton lived in the R3-million Silver Lakes mansion the couple shared during their stormy marriage.

  • and it continues:

Andrea said it was unreasonable to expect her to drive the “old” car, as she was used to much more. She pointed out that during her marriage, she drove eight brand-new, top-of-the-range BMWs.

The former model said their monthly expenses were about R150 000 during their marriage.

She was aiming to get half of his assets and R50 000 a month maintenance after the divorce.

She also had plenty of other demands, including a Persian carpet, a flat-screen TV and two couches.

She also felt it was terribly unfair that she was made to drive a ‘battered’ 2004 car
Her counsel said she was surely entitled to “sit and watch TV”.

Andrea said at this stage she only received R10 000 a month from Dalton, while her clothing and beauty expenses alone ran to more than R4 000 a month .

Andrea also demanded R7 500 a month for groceries, which made Judge Lettie Malopa ask whether this was for one person.

Her counsel said that if one was used to mince and rice, it may seem a bit much, but if one was used to rump steak, caviar and prawns, it was very little.

She also demanded money to pay for domestic work, as during their marriage they had three servants, the court was told. This prompted the judge to ask whether she still needed three servants. Her counsel said she would make do with only one.

Dalton claimed he only earned R60 000 a month and couldn’t afford to finance her lavish lifestyle, but Andrea claimed he was earning much more and hiding his assets in various companies.

The court heard that an investigator would be appointed to probe these companies and report back to the court during the divorce proceedings.

Isma Delport, appearing for Dalton, said in terms of the law, Andrea was only entitled to reasonable expenses as interim maintenance, pending the divorce.

“She isn’t entitled to the luxuries she demands. Not even if she was married to Bill Gates,” Delport said.

Apart from ordering that she had to receive R15 000 a month maintenance instead of the R10 000 she got, the court also ordered that Dalton had to continue paying for Andrea’s medical aid and her policies.
