“Boks will be smiling when they see this call”

Former Springbok captain Corne Krige believes the All Blacks decision to switch Rodney So’oialo to flanker will backfire as the traditional enemies square off in the opening Tri-Nations test on Saturday.

Wynne Gray writes in the NZ Herald that Krige accepts the change will improve the All Blacks lineout because they can include the taller Adam Thomson and Jerome Kaino in their jumping mix for Wellington.

But he thought it left the All Blacks far more vulnerable to the scavenging talents of the Boks – one reason why he would have picked Chris Masoe to replace injured All Black captain Richie McCaw.

The bitingly tough Krige, who waged many loose-forward battles against the All Blacks, thinks the rookie host loosies will be exposed to the foraging experienced flanker power of the Springboks.

“I thought it was just nothing talk when they were touting So’oialo as a possible openside,” he told a South African website. “His best position is clearly No 8 and I don’t think his strength is playing towards the ball.

“Masoe is far more suited to the role, has experience playing there and provides you with a solid ball-carrying option as well.

“I think the Springboks will be smiling when they see this call. Perhaps [the All Blacks] were looking for a player that could provide them with another lineout option. But other than that I can’t understand the decision,” he said.

The Springboks name their side today (Thursday) with the only loose-forward problem for new coach Peter de Villiers being who he will cull from the backrow.

He has the abundant talent of Ryan Kankowski, Joe Van Niekerk, Luke Watson, Schalk Burger, Juan Smith and Pierre Spies to choose from for this opening Tri-Nations test.

Kankowski is the least experienced but possibly the most talented of the prospective loosies. He was concussed two weeks ago against Italy and may be given another week to fully recuperate if de Villiers opts for experience.

Meanwhile, So’oialo will lead the All Blacks for the first time in his 45th test while he will also switch to the No 7 jersey which he wore once before – in the third test against the Lions in 2005.

The versatile So’oialo has not played much in that roving role since his early rugby days but the All Black selectors had few doubts about making the change once McCaw was hurt.

While the former Bok captain rates his side’s loose-forward play and lineout as strengths, he has reservations about the quality of their scrum.

He believes selectors made a huge mistake in ditching experienced prop BJ Botha and including new men Brian Mujati and Tendai Mtawarira.

“If you are dominated in the lineouts you can put it down to the technical superiority of the opposition and you can circumvent that issue by changing certain tactics,” he said.

“But if you’re being dominated in the scrums it has a major psychological impact because you’re losing a one-on-one battle and are essentially being bullied and physically beaten.

“The All Blacks backline is dangerous at the best of times. We’ll have to work hard and smart there or we could be in trouble.”

  • Former Springbok captain Corne Krige was publicly rebuked by current skipper John Smit on Thursday for questioning the credentials of stand-in All Blacks skipper Rodney So’oialo.

Smit labelled Krige a “rent-a-quote” for voicing surprise that So’oialo, the All Blacks regular backrower, should be captain and openside flanker in place of the injured Richie McCaw for Saturday’s opening Tri-Nations Test.

“As far as McCaw goes, he’s a massive loss from both a playing and leadership perspective. I’m not sure So’oialo commands the same respect,” Krige told the South African rugby website keo.co.za.

“I thought it was just nothing talk when they were touting So’oialo as a possible openside. His best position is clearly No. 8 and I don’t think his strength is playing towards the ball.”

  • But So’oialo, the All Blacks regular backrower in recent seasons, found a ready ally in Smit who was quick to rubbish Krige, a loose forward and his predecessor as the Springboks captain until retiring in 2004.

“I can’t see how much Corne has had to do with Rodney or the experience he’s had of playing against him,” Smit said.

“We seem to have a company in South Africa called rent-a-quote and Corne’s at the top of the list at the moment.

“I wouldn’t say there’s any validity in that. I know Rodney personally and I’ve been playing against him for many years. He might not be as intuitive (as McCaw) but he’s as active on the field and I think that’s what counts most as captain.”

So’oialo, meanwhile, said he was looking forward to the challenge of playing at No. 7 and leading the All Blacks.

“Having Richie missing, that’s a big challenge because he’s not only got the leadership quality but he’s a great player,” he said.

“That’s going to be the biggest challenge for us, not having him around. I’m willing to take up that challenge.”

The 28-year-old So’oialo, a 44-Test veteran, is the central figure in the All Blacks loose foward mix with backrower Jerome Kaino and flanker Adam Thomson having just six Tests between them, none against the Springboks.

  • The idea of benefit matches died with amateurism.

The benefit match/year/week/month was only to fill the player’s coffers before retiring.

These days they make a small fortune so there really is no need for any further benefits – they get a benefit with every paycheck!

What respect? Are you serious? I dont get a benefit match where I take all the profits from one day at my job.

The entire concept has to do with a big payday for a player in reward for 10 years service and to top up his pension fund before retirnement.

That’s the sole reason for having the benefits. And it has fallen away.
It has ntohing to do with respect – it has to do with the fact that you cant get paid an exorbitant salary but then also expect the perks that were prevalent before the advent of professioanlism.

These guys get well-paid for the fact that they no longer get some of these benefits. You think they should also be getting boot money?

Gestures are best left for the N1 in the morning.

But seriously, a gesture for what? For doing your job and getting paid?
Players are already the ones makign all the money while the provinces and unions struggle finacnially.

I just dont see how you can justify such a “gesture” in the profesisonal age.

Players dont give a toss – they jump ship at the first given opportunity to play abroad or for more money.

What you’ll probably find is that gesutres such as this feel away the moment players appointed agents to play hardball with the unions when it comes to salary negotiations.
If you want to negotuiate hard on your salary you surely cant expect the union to give you a benefit just because they like you!

You’re either professional or you’re not. Benefit games and gestures dont belong in the profesisonal era.
In he profesisonal era players get paid against thier performances.
