The best possible team after 3 rounds

Here’s a meaningless exercise is hindsight – picking the best possible Fantasy League team: The team that would have scored the maximum points possible after three rounds of the competition.

Here’s what the team looks like:

Props:
Rayno Gerber
Werner Kruger
Jaco Engels
(In fact, this is arbitrary. Pick any 3 props who have scored a total of 5 points over 3 rounds and you’ll be fine)
Hookers:
Adriaan Strauss
Bandise Maku
(Again, any pair will do here)
Other Forwards:
Pedrie Wannenberg
Baywatch Grobbelaar
Bioplus van der Merwe
Ross Skeate
Jacques Botes
Wikus van Heerden
Johann Muller
Hendro Scholtz
Halfbacks:
Willem de Waal
True Blue Smit
Chris Rossouw
Morne Steyn
Centres:
Wynand Olivier
JW Jonker
Gcobani Bobo
Lionel Cornelius
Outside Backs:
Earl Rose
Justin Peach
Jacques Schutte
John Mametsa
John Daniels

The above combination would have netted you an impressive 236.5 points after three rounds. This includes a total of 5 try bonus points, for scoring 9, 9 and 4 tries in rounds 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Also, the individual round scores were high enough to win the 5 point MVP bonus in each round by quite some distance.

What is absolutely staggering about this combination, is that five of the highest points scorers are not in anybody’s squad! That’s right, nobody playing in the league has any of Smit, Schutte, Peach, Cornelius or van der Merwe in their team. Looks like we all missed a trick there.

Remember, you can check out contestant and player scores overall, or for each round, over here. Click on a particular player’s name to see which contestants (if any) have included that player in their squad.

  • I’ll compile a team like this every three rounds or so.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 5) : remember, this is a trial.

A couple of things will change before we do it for the Super 14 next year.

I want to tweak the scoring, to make tries count more than they currently do. That said, if they hadn’t nerfed the Currie Cup so badly, maybe we’d see more tries scored, which would have more of an impact on the scores.

  • what do you guys think about having different points allocations for players that start as opposed to those who are on the bench?

  • @blackshark (Comment 8) : yeah – me too.

Could have different points for players that play the whole game, get subbed, etc etc

  • Be good if transfers were introduced, ie you pick your squad of 26 odd, and then pick a weekly 22, so players that are non performing can be put in the wider group and not be as less cost effective but you always have to keep the original squad. And then you only get points based on the weekly 22, Say 2 for starting 15 and 1 for being in the 22. Perhaps award a .5 for getting more than 20 minutes for subs as a bonus.

  • @Sauce (Comment 10) : it’s such a big step to take, though, because it will increase the maintenance aspect hugely…

Perhaps we need to do a survey and see who would be into that.

  • yah Rob agreed, was thinking something along the lines of a simple form with check boxes or something with a save ability. But i know what you mean simple is good and it is less admin for both players and you.

i dropped you a mail with a little code snippet to consider.

  • @Sauce (Comment 10) : Yeah…a simplified way of subbing players would make things easier…because “balancing the books” on TESTRUGBY can be rather time-consuming.

  • @Sauce (Comment 12) : thanks… will look at in the moment I manage to get onto 2.5.

You know, I had to write my own poll, cos I couldn’t get any of the existing ones to work? Crazy, eh?

  • @blackshark (Comment 13) : I just don’t have the time to try and work out player values and the like…

It might be simpler to have a certain number of trades over the season, where you can trade one player for another in the same position. It would be a small number, though, just to allow you to sub out long-term injuries…

  • @robdylan (Comment 15) : Stressful for the players too…why can’t I just have all the “BEST” players for my team ? Now I have to worry about how much money I have left? If I wanted to run a rugby team I’d buy one.

  • @Hmmm (Comment 18) : this will right itself… Peach and Smit are both out this week anyway. I’ll beet that neither of them, nor Jacques Schutte, will still feature in the best team after 6 weeks
