Boks call up a Strauss

IN SA Rugby these days, it’s generally a case of “pick a Strauss, any Strauss”.

When deciding on who to call in to replace the suspended Bismarck du Plessis for Saturday’s test against the Walalbies, it was Free State hooker Adriaan who got the nod. His cousin Richardt is another Strauss who may have been eligible, since he plays hooker. Sharks duo Andries (a centre and Richardt’s brother) and Nic (a flanker and seemingly not related) were not considered for obvious reasons.

Strauss will be on his way to Perth to sit on the Bok bench as we speak. It’s good news for the Sharks, since he won’t be included in the Free State team for this weekend’s Currie Cup clash in Bloemfontein.

  • Strauss is a good hooker. Does the basics well. No Bismarck, though.

    As I said before, I would start with him and leave Brits on the bench. Don’t thin it will happen, though.

    Man, Gerrie Botha must be kicking himself now

  • @wpw (Comment 2) : It’s my way of phonetically spelling “Gary” as it would be pronounced with a Loftus accent.

    @Big Fish (Comment 3) : Fraid so…

  • Pieter Jordaan reports from Bloemfontein that Strauss, a farmer’s son from Philippolis, was “in shock” on Sunday after being told he had to join the Springboks.

    The blond, 23-year-old Cheetahs hooker, will depart on Monday and is expected to arrive in Perth on Tuesday morning.

  • @robdylan (Comment 7) :

    Leave him alone…it’s only to warm a bench so he is not needed…

  • I would have selected Richardt…just don’t know how effective any of them will be with lineout throws having less than a week to get used to the play…

    My suspicion was that that was the case with Bosmark hence the reason we had those very peculiar line-out’s…3 people of which it was all for Vic to get…so suspect more of these peculiar line-outs on our throw….

  • I never knew Andries and Richardt were brothers…I thought that Andries was related to neither…

    What a rugby family then…Richardt will do himself a favour moving to another province…I would even suggest Bulls…
