Proteas grit it out

SA 312/1 at Lunch Day 5, minimum of 59 overs left. SA trail by 34 runs with 9 wickets remaining.

After trailing in the first test against England at Lords for three days, on day four the South Africans showed they were made of sterner stuff, lead by captain Graham Smith and phoenix Neil NcKenzie. Both players scored hundreds on day 4 to put the Proteas in a fighting position on day 5.

It says a lot about the Proteas side that they are in this position considering how much they were dominated over the first three days of this opening test.

With a minimum of 90 overs to be played on Day 5 it promises to be an enticing day’s cricket in the sunshine at Lords as the South Africans attempt to bat through the day and salvage the test.

In keeping with their rugby counter-parts, this Proteas team is showing some of the grit and determination that has been lacking from some of the South African sides of the last few years. It seems we might be heading for the days of old where all South African teams had a never-say-die attitude.

Regular updates through the day.

Any mods please feel to update the score in the first line of this article.

Reckon we can put one over the English in this test and escape wioth a draw.

We definitely have the batsmen that are capable of shutting up shop for the day.

  • Well…looks like we’ll save face…Graeme Smith’s face…

It’s never easy playing away from home…but we went to England as favourites and maybe we should start playing with more confidence.

  • @blackshark (Comment 4) :

    Agreed.
But they had very little preparation.
They arrived in England with very little time to preapre and then it rained every day in the lead-up to the test.

One of the commmentators on day 1 mentioned that they didn’t even have an opportunity to play on the Lord’s pitch before the first ball was bowled becasue of the weather.
And it showed with all the bowlers taking an age to get into any osrt of rhythm.

But yeah, time to step up in the second job.

We’ll take tremendous confidence if we manage to bat out today – I just hope Smith doesn’t try to make a game of it and declare stupidly at tea or something.

  • It would be brilliant if we could bat all day today, which would mean the Poms would have been in the field for 3 days, then win the toss at Headingley and bat again!

  • @blackshark (Comment 8) :  Good one

But seriously, their bowlers are taking a bit of strain. It was a hot day in London yesterday and again today. Sidebottom has a sore back. Monty has so far bowled 44 overs in the second innings.
And there isn’t much of a break between tests, so if we can bat first at Headingley and bat well…they could wilt!

  • @Villie (Comment 9) : Makes a lot of sense to me…but maybe someone should explain it to our skipper.

I am usually a vocal BIFF-defender…but I need him to prove me right on the field.

  • They say you should bat 9 out of ten times when winning the toss.
On the 10th occasion you have a long, hard think about it and then bat anyway.
