Sharks’ defense letting them down

Frederic Michalak is “good to go”‘ for the Sharks in their Absa Currie Cup visit to the Cheetahs on Saturday, but while the French international will add panache on attack, it is on defence that the Sharks will urgently need to sort themselves out.

Mike Greenaway, IOL.

Without taking too much away from the enterprising Falcons, the Sharks were split open too often by the lowly Brakpan team on Friday night.

“Our defensive pattern is not working as well as it should be,” admitted assistant coach Grant Bashford after his team’s victory over the Falcons, coached by former Bulls boss Rudy Joubert.

“It is a case of us having too many changes too soon. We are not working as a team in defence with guys running out of line and not trusting our system. It is to be expected when you have the player turnover from the Super 14 and we are obviously working very hard on fixing the problem

  • Is it a South African failing that we do not give credit where credit is due? Yes the Sharks’ defence was not what it has been, but the Valke are looking a far better team than in the past. We should not forget that they have beaten the Grikwas who gave WP a carrot on Saturday, the same team that not too long ago beat the Sharks. The Valke also nearly beat the Lions who have only last two players from their S14 team.

  • Valke are looking good…I think they are the best attacking team thus far…
If not mistaken they have scored the second most tries (only second to the LIONS)…so they are bound to open up a few teams…
If the Valke get their defense right then they will come away with a few more victories this season…unfortunately effort on defense usually takes away some of the attacking spark…so I hope they get their balance right…we need competition in the CC…

  • @robdylan (Comment 4) : No, Rob what I was trying to say, is that our perception of the Valke is based on past performances, where as this year, they appear to be a different team this season. So in short what I was saying is yes the Shark’s defence was poorer than normal, but the Valke were much better than they were given credit for!

  • @Sharksmad (Comment 6) : ah – ok. Yes – good point.

I need to do an article about that, actually. So far this year, the minnows have actually been VERY competitive. EU player drain and Bok callups weakening the Big 5 may well have a fair bit to do with it, though.

  • If we score 4,5 or 6 tries regularly…we’ll start to worry less about conceeding 1 or 2.

I know they say defence wins games…but in my own little world I still believe SCORING does.

    Only if you score more…LoL

You must have liked the late 90′s then…there scores were above 30 for both teams regularly…

  • Sharks should just recruit the Valke backline coach and let Grant Bashford go back to cricket.

NO! At least our (rather beleagured) cricket team occassionally wins domestic trophies! Let’s not give them the kiss of death by sending Bashford to the cricket nets…
