Deysel back!

It sounds like Jean Deysel will be back for this weekend’s clash against the Lions.

For the Sharks, the hard running loose forward has been sorely missed, since injuring his hand in a meaningless warm-up game against the Griffons six weeks ago. The combination of Jacques Botes and Keegan Daniel hasn’t really been working for the Durban boys, particularly given the lack of a decent foil on the blindside of the scrum.

Added to the fact that Ryna Kankowski has been released from the Bok squad, the Sharks may actually be able to field close to a full-strength loose trio, with Botes on the openside, Deysel at 7 and Kankowski at the back. Kankowski, though, seems to be nursing a number of bumps and bruises. Talk from within the camp seems to suggest that Deysel will start at 8, with Kankowski on the bench, if included in the squad at all.

The news couldn’t come at a better time. Let’s just hope that this might be the start of better fortunes for the Sharks, who simply cannot afford another performance as woeful as last weekend’s.

    15 stefan
    14 odwa
    13 murray
    12 barritt / strauss
    11 jordaan
    10 michelak
    09 ruan
    08 ryan
    07 deysel
    06 botes
    05 muller
    04 sykes
    03 bj
    02 skipper
    01 beast / carstens

    16 burden
    17 albert
    18 beast/carstens
    19 keegan
    20 Mcleod
    21 barritt/strauss

not sure that is exactly the team i would choose because i dont know the injury situation but my only real weakness seems to be lock and hooker where we got murdered last week

our front row could have been carstens-beast- bj
    with jannie on the bench
talk about jannie?? he needs to work on his handling skills or lack thereof

Hey…I think it is going to be a real tough battle….especially because of the negativity around the Sharks team…so they will be out to prove a thing or two…
LIONS will realize pretty early in the game that this is not the Valke/Boland/Griekwas who they scored over 110 points against collectively the last 3 weeks….

Waylon isn’t physically slow – at the moment, mentally perhaps.

The slowest wing must be Jannie Boshoff. When I see him “run” I keep checking to see if I hit the slow-mo button on my PVR.

Only thing slower than Jannie is the growth rate of the Lions Supporters club.

  • Upbeat Sharks looking to recover
    Tue, 22 Jul 2008 19:51

The mood was distinctly buoyant at the Sharks’ training session on Tuesday, no thanks to the return of four Springboks as well as two key players returning from injury.

With Frederic Michalak still touch and go after taking a bump to the hip, the backline will not be finalised until later in the week, with Sharks coach John Plumtree explaining that the flyhalf is still quite tender.

“Hopefully by Thursday he [Michalak] will be a lot better,” Plumtree told sharksrugby.com.

However, the good news was that Jean Deysel and Bradley Barritt were back in training, while Ruan Pienaar, Beast Mtawarira, Odwa Ndungane and Ryan Kankowski all look likely to get game time in the crucial Currie Cup match against the Lions on Saturday.

Following last Saturday’s loss to the Cheetahs, the Sharks find themselves in something of a pressure situation as they look to get back to winning form, though Plumtree admitted the returning Boks were not expected to be the sole influence.

“The Springboks plus a couple of injuries that have come right as well was good to see,” explained Plumtree.

“Four good, class players adds to the depth and makes the job easier.

“The important point is that we have to make sure we play well enough to help their transformation back into the team – the danger is we as a group expect them to get us going and it shouldn’t be like that,” he added.

Compared to a week ago, the Sharks are certainly in a better position in terms of manpower, but despite the boost in player personnel, the coach admitted that he’s saving his smiles for the result, not the build-up.

“I’ll smile if we play well on the weekend.”

With three forwards and three backs added to the mix, this certainly creates more options for a Sharks team who this time last week had to face the prospect of playing a close-on full-strength Cheetahs side, while themselves had a severe test of squad depth.

“The pack has a bit of a different look to it, especially the loose forwards in particular and with Beast back it gives us a bit of depth in the front row, so we’re happy with that,” Plumtree added

you guys only need one guy to be okay IMO and that is Fourie.

He makes the world of difference to that team.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 79) : I don’t think he’s lost his speed…maybe his compass…but I think he still has the pace…

Well if performances against WP are anything to go by…I’d say Griekwas and Valke from that list…
But then again…is a fav result against WP anything to go by???? Very debatable…..

    Big Fish…
I donno why you say Boshoff is the slowest…he has shown in the CC and S14 that he can run with the big bois at wing…And Boshoff sprinted away from Kabamba and not the other way around in Murray’s case…
Now I know Kabama (like a Spies/Kanko/Botes) is not slow…but the way he sprinted away from Murray on Saturday was just terrible…and humiliating for a backline player…
He surely is slower than what he was…donno if 104kg is just too much for his legs to carry…or what it is….might be in the mind…I donno…

But I guess you are right…besides Human and touch and go with Frediricks I’d say Boshoff is in the slowest 3 or 4 wings…if Murray plays there…Boshoff will def move up one more spot…cozz I think Murray is even slower than Human at this stage….

Murray had to turn and chase dude – hardly an even race.

Boshoff is a decent player, but he isn’t even close to Fredericks in terms of pace.

Probably as slow as Walter Venter or Wylie Human, I agree.

  • every game the sharks have played this year the have battled to get going.WHY???? The forwards seem to be going through the motion to make up the 80 mins game time. We need 14 players with the heart and guts like RORY KOCKOTT who gives 110 percent each game.Mind you Plumbtree and his side kick are not my cup of tea too.
