Valke fullback True Blue Smit will replace the suspended winger Johan Swartz, who was banned for a spear tackle, for their Absa Currie Cup rugby fixture against the Cheetahs this weekend.

SuperRugby reports that Smit, who played at flyhalf before injuring his heel, will start at fullback while the speedy Nicky Kritzinger moves to the left wing. Smit will fondly remember his last game in Bloemfontein last season when he scored a hat-trick for the Pumas against the Free State in the Vodacom Cup.

Flyhalf Len Olivier has done an excellent job since replacing Smit at pivot and he threatened the Western Province and Sharks defence on numerous occasions.

Coach Rudy Joubert made one change to the pack after their historical victory over WP, with strong man Gavin Whittingham returning to the front row.

The rest of the pack stays unchanged with lock Marius Coetzer having recovered to partner Wouter Moore.

New reserve Johan Jackson has opted to represent the Valke on Friday night after being selected for the SA Students side to meet Namibia in Windhoek on Saturday. He joins new recruits Straatkat van Zyl and Jody Jeneker on the bench. Both made their Valke debut last weekend.

*Swartz was banned for one week at a tribunal meeting at Coca-Cola Park on Thursday night after his red card offence, but both Province players who were yellow carded for a similar offence, lock Ross Skeate and flanker Francois Louw, got off scot free, showing up the irregularities in the judicial system.

Valke: True Blue Smit; Dewald Pretorius, Rouan Cloete, Hanno Coetzee (capt) , Nicky Kritzinger; Len Olivier, Gerrie Odendaal; Sean Plaatjies, Warren Perkins, Reg Muller, Marius Coetzer, Wouter Moore, Nico Pretorius, Ryno Barnes, Gavin Whittingham.

Reserves: Jody Jeneker, Frik Venter, Reggie Perkins, Emile Verster, Straatkat van Zyl, Johan Jackson, Jeff Perkins.

  • A few weeks ago I didn’t like this team at all. Something about them being associated with the team in baby blue.

Anyway, They have certainly made it very difficult to continue my dislike for them. They are playing some great rugby and if only WP or the Sharks could emmulate their style of play we would both be log topping teams.

    GO VALKE!!!!!!!!!!

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 1) : I have, for some strange reason, always liked the Valke, maybe that they always gave the match a good fight, this year they are looking awsome!

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 4) : If Loftus & Coke Park & Bloem can have nice lush green grass in winter, so can the Valke. But it’s probably too expensive.

  • @Sharksmad (Comment 5) :

I was shocked when they won their promotion relegation matches last year and though the gap between premier and 1st Div CC was huge.

Now it turns out these guys have upped their game big time.

  • @ra-cheltjie de’ be-er (Comment 6) : It’s probably their secret weapon. The softies from the big unions would be very uncomfortable playing on a pith like that.
