Lions Named

Coach Eugene Eloff has chosen a strong Xerox Lions team to take on the Sharks in Round Six of The Absa Currie Cup at The Absa Stadium Durban on Saturday afternoon (5pm Kick-off).

LionsRugby reports that with a number of injury concerns in the camp, the good news is that captain Cobus Grobbelaar has been passed fit to start. Not so for Springbok centre Jaque Fourie who has been ruled out of the match after there were initial hopes that he would make the cut.

Jaco Pretorius will now take over from Fourie at outside centre with Heinie Gordon coming in on the wing.

Late changes have further disrupted matters, with Earl Rose shifting to flyhalf from fullback, Louis Ludik taking over at 15, with Ryno Benjamin starting on the wing after initially being named on the bench.

The Xerox Lions will go into this crunch match aware that a huge ask awaits them, and with both sides at relatively full-strength with the Sharks welcoming back six players variously from injury and the Springboks, and the Lions lifted by the naming of their stalwarts, an eagerly-anticipated clash is on the cards.

The Xerox Lions will also be motivated by their win over the Sharks in last year’s semi-final at the same venue pretty much against the odds, and further confidence will be taken from their run of three straight wins.

Xerox Lions:
15. Louis Ludik
14. Heini Gordon
13. Jaco Pretorius
12. Doppies la Grange
11. Ryno Benjamin
10. Earl Rose
9. Jano Vermaak
8. Willem Alberts
7. Franco van der Merwe
6. Cobus Grobbelaar (Captain)
5. Gerhard Mostert
4. Dewald Senekal
3. Lawrence Sephaka
2. Willie Wepener
1. Heinke van der Merwe

Reserves:
16. Ethienne Reynecke
17. Gert Muller
18. Anton van Zyl
19. Justin Wheeler
20. Chris Jonck
21. Michael Killian
22. Dusty Noble / Tsepo Kokoali

  • It is a strong looking forward pack..Have not seen Sephakas form this year so can’t really comment but I think with Hienke there the scrums should make for a interesting contest.
Problem as you point out Robd is our back 3..except Ludik ofcourse.

  • Benjamin scored a great try in the S14 with a wonderful hand-off. Can’t recall against whom. But in general he has shocking hands, saw him knock-on about three balls in one game not too long ago (S14) – it’s amazing how he keeps his contract.

  • The agent of one of the 6 players told management his player and 5 others were “unhappy” at the Lions, so they got called in. The other 5 didn’t know anything…The one unhappy player (I guess he is happy now) is in the starting XV.

  • Anyway, Rose is at 10 because Strydom and van Schalkwyk is injured, and we don’t have another Flyhalf, so it’s not some clever plan by Loffie, it’s desperation.

  • okay so who want a job in the UK?

Nevado Ltd, the operator of SuperBru, is looking for a junior website administrator to work at its office in south-west London. Could this be you or someone you know?

We?re looking for someone to join our team to work on a variety of web ventures, one of which is SuperBru – so it?s not exclusively a SuperBru job.

We?re well aware that most of you are based in South Africa, but thought we?d see if there is interest amongst our UK-based audience, and if those in South Africa might have a friend or family member who?s looking for a job in London.

We won?t accept applications from anyone wanting to work remotely: you?ll need to be based in our office; and you?ll have to be eligible to work full time in the UK.
