Another player makes hay while the Kolpak sun still shines

Cheetahs reserve hooker Jaco du Toit will be in their match 22 for the last time this weekend. The promising hooker is on his way to play club rugby in Italy.

This creates a mini crisis in the centre of the scrum for the Bloemfontein team, with Richardt Strauss their only real hooking option. Strauss’s cousin, Adriaan, the regular first choice, has been called up to the Bok squad at the expense of WP’s Schalk Brits.

The Cheetah’s short term plam, at least until the older Strauss returns, is to borrow the Leopards’ Riaan Kruger, himself way back in the pecking order for the first division side. The talk is that young prop Philip Lemmer may be given a run at hooker at some stage as well. The youngster apparently played in the number 2 jersey at age-group level.

Hopping onto my soapbox for a moment, one really hopes that the imminent changes to the Kolpak ruling (which allows SA players to ply their trade in Europe virtually without restriction) will force European clubs to be a little more selective in who they choose to take. There is a strong perception at the moment that if a player doesn’t immediately make it at provincial level here, he will just go overseas – there will always be a club somewhere that will take him. We’re kind of becoming the equivalent of the mass Eastern European workforce in rugby terms. There are lots of us and we’ll work for next to nothing.

The attitude of sticking with something and playing your guts out until you actually make it seems outdated and old-fashioned. The culture of instant gratification means that if I don’t get what I want – and get it right now, I’m buggering off. Frankly, very disappointing.

  • The number of guys on the fringes of the Sharks squad that are looking at the European option is frankly staggering.

  • I wonder how many players (not the sharks in particular) will make “hasty” decisions before the Kolpak pathway is “closed”

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 2) : I know of at least one young Sharks player who had a move to Perpignan blocked by our own Mr Straueli…

  • How much does a Cheetah reserve hooker get paid to play in Italy?

  • I agree Rob.

He seems a very good player.

Willie Wepenaar has also been playing well this season.
