Sharks changes aplenty

The Sharks are going to Kimberley with much-changed backline and a few different faces in the pack as well. Most concerning is the selection of a halfback partnership that just plain doesn’t look up to the job.

Having lost all of the returning Springboks after just one week, Plumtree has been forced into changes at left wing, number 8 and flyhalf, with Lwazi Mvovo coming in for Odwa Ndungane in an otherwise unchanged back three. Andries Strauss has been dropped to the bench, giving Riaan Swanepoel a first start at inside centre. Pienaar’s unavailability means that Monty Dumond is back at flyhalf. Fred Michalak’s name is nowhere to be seen, meaning he has presumably not yet recovered from the hip injury picked up against the Cheetahs. Scott Mathie continue at scrum half.

The front row is unchanged, but Alistair Hargreaves comes in at lock for Albert van den Berg, who is excluded altogether for the trip to his one-time home town. Keegan Daniel is again at number 8, with Jean Deysel retained on the blind side. There are welcome returns to the matchday 22 for Andrew Borgen, Skollie Ndlovu and Springbok prop BJ Botha.

The coaching staff will hope that the inclusion of Swanepoel helps to get a static backline division going. My gut feel is, though, that the loss of Kankowski’s bulk and the continued inclusion of the out-of-sorts Mathie are likely to ensure that any ball Swannie receives will be on the back foot.

Prepare for a long, frustrating afternoon, Sharks fans.

  • My only initial concern was Dumond and Swanepoel

Then I realised that Dumond is the best we have at the moment and while he may not be a S14 flyhalf he certainly hasn’t let us down this season.

As for Swanepoel, once I saw his pic on Sharksrugby it jogged my memory and I think there is NOTHING wrong with him, he has done damn well when he has come on this season.

Strauss has been the better player between him and Murray and I think 13 will suit Riaan better…so IMO not got it quite right…

  • @robdylan (Comment 15) : OK….BUT…. what can you expect from a team that week in and week out, are constantly being interupted either by call ups to the Bok squad or injuries?
How can we, the Sharks, plan a Curry Cup season, knowing that we are likely to loose more than 3/4s of a team to the Boks?
No franchise, no matter how big or wealthy, can justify having 3 to 4 teams of the best players in SA, just to have the depth, in case virtually a whole team (13) players, are called up or injured. There would be a huge out cry about those players NOT GETTING GAME TIME!!!
In the good old days when we won a couple of Curry Cups, we were the team with the least number of Boks & we used to moan like hell because OUR BOYS were not in the Bok team….now the boot is on the other foot and, in my opinion, a lot of fans, this blog included, are more worried about were they stand in “Fantacy Leagues” etc, than they are in supporting our players, who are all doing their best to keep the Shark’s name high. We should be supporting them and not telling them they are playing “shit”!!

  • Hey everyone…

I’m not just saying this to sound like the optimist that I am but I think the Sharks will fight it out and win this one by more than 5 points. I know it’s gonna be tough day in Kimberley but I think Botes-Deysel and Keegan will match and then raise the Griquas loose-trio with a combination of hard work, a bit of muscle and a lot of pace.

Somebody please tell Mathie that Eric Clapton wants his nickname back. The boy has been in the setup for a long time now but he always looks scared…he needs to grow a pair of sumthin.

One thing I know is the players know what’s coming and they will not underestimate the Griquas…that should be the difference between us and WP.

  • Sorry guys, somehow the site gave me errors after my initial comment so I could not elaborate.

Problems in the loosies as Rob eluded to and on the hard quick fields in Kimberley, that is going to count against you.

Dumond at 10 is another huge concern and I honestly do not see many options for the Sharks to attack from deep looking at your out of form 13 and lack of pace at 15.

This is also a strength of Griquas (attacking from deep) and Terblanche ufortunately is not very good lately at 15.

Expect the huge Kwas loosies to attack Dumond’s channel all afternoon.

The Sharks lost by a solitary point (22 – 23) to Griquas at Absa Park in Kimberley on Saturday in week four of the Absa Currie Cup to relinquish their unbeaten record in the competition.

  • Campo is not a coach. He doesn’t coach backline moves, he assists players with their skill levels, but as Bryce alluded to in post 65, if he can’t get schoolboy rugby doing well, what’s he going to achieve at CC level.

Anyhow, interesting stat raised by Bashford on the Sharks site – 5/6 games they’ve had a differnt flyhalf. Add Mathie’s poor service, our forwards being bullied off the ball, or playing on the wing and our backs which aren’t the best as it is, and Stefan’s incessant up and unders (I sound like a stuck record here), and our Backline is doomed to failure.

  • KSA, quite correct on all accounts. Obviously in hindsight, it was the wrong thing to do. But it also gave the players an opportunity to put up their hands for long term inclusion. The fact that they lost, and 14/22 (thanks Rob!) are no longer around shows that emphatically, hands were NOT raised for that game.

  • @hellbent (Comment 73) : that’s actually bullshit. You don’t test players’ aptitude for big rugby by picking them en masse for a tricky away fixture, only to dump them en masse when they don’t perform. You need to introduce new guys into an established team one or two at a time.

The Sharks have never been any good at succession planning. I for one think we may have got rid of far too much of our core of good backup two years ago, which might explain our current predicament.

@Pokkel (Comment 50) : I have been saying, that our backline needs a new coach, since the S14….we have the talented & experienced players BUT they are no being brought through.
We can go on about how much the players are paid BUT big salaries do not make good accountants, docrors, PLAYERS, etc….they are made by the people who teach them , and that is the problem with our backline coach (teacher)…he is not getting it right’AND he is being paid BIG BUCKS!!!

  • @Me2 (Comment 84) : Agreed that coaches coach, but at the end of the day, players play. No-one coaches them to miss tackles or drop passes or pass badly. I know when Plum arrived, I recall reading about him saying it was about going back to basics and the players learning to pass and pass crisply and accurately.

South Africans have always got by on brute strength and zero skills, but at senior level in the modern day, we are not bigger than the oppo and our lack of side-stepping ability and passing (Wynand Olivier a case in point) has shown us up all too often.

But you cannot keep saying it is bad coaching and keep replacing the coaches liek SA soccer does. There aren’t enough good coaches out there.

I for one don’t believe it is asimplistic as that. I do believe players need to be a bit more grown up and accept responsibility.

  • @robdylan (Comment 78) : Rob I agree to an extent, but what big team doesn’t have a squad of 40-50 players anyway? If we had got the basics right in that game, we wouldn’t have lost. But I recall Jaco Gouws throwing an intercept ball and Kees missing tackles by th dozen. In fact, most of the guys missed tackles. Remember too, we lost by just 1 point. If we have won, there wouldn’t be this argument.

  • @hellbent (Comment 87) : I agree BUT our backline lacks guidance AND that is the coaches responsiblity….Waylon is a point in case…he has great talent BUT when he gets the ball in open play, he inevertably, runs across the field, he does not straighten the line & puts all the other backs under pressure….he also does not pass the ball as much as he should…now if a real amateur, like me, can see that….why is the coach not doing something about it….if it is because he does not listen…then send him to have an “ice bath” at half time

    1) The Sharksrugby blog had to be closed on legal advice. The Union was worried that it might get sued because of some of the overly-critical comments aimed at players and management.

    2) Rory – probably still 2 weeks. Brad might be back for WP next week, but somehow I doubt it.

No confusion about who won last year, only about whether the Kimberley game was televised, that and some bloggers halucinations.

I think that is rubbish…they closed it cozz they did not want the truth aired and out in the open like that…
On keo many people have been personally insulted but keo was covered legally…(Naas incident)…
So I believe it is cozz the players and the management were unable to handle the truth…

    Surely you jest?

You must understand that the issue of damages for defamation against a 3rd party, and the issue of employee grievance against an employer for unfair labour practise are totally different.

Keo cannot be sued for negative comments about Sharks players by the players, as he is not their employer.

The KZNRU however is their employer and as such can be sued for that.

Comparing Keo and Sharksrugby blogs misses that vital difference.

    LoL
The point was that they are unable to manage the truth…so it is more a shot at Sharks than legal opinion (which if given by me is dangerous)…

Your the fundi on statistics and SuperSport – which of the games played between the Sharks and Griquas was not telivised last year. I thought it was the Kimberley game but have been informed by someone closer to those things that it was the Durban game. Can you help.

  • @Hmmm (Comment 158) :
I see what you are getting at, but you are still missing the point – it doesn’t matter whether its true or not; so ‘managing the truth’ doesn’t come into it.

Employees can potentially take umbrage if an employer allows outsiders to make crude comments about their employees on an officially sanctioned site.

Imagine if Telkom hosted a site like Helkom? Never gonna happen for the same reason. The problem was simply that some “fans” went over-board in expressing their opinions.

  • @I’ce (Rebel With a Cause) (Comment 67) : I keep waiting for Wes to get the nod again. I hope we see more him during this CC campaign.

@mbay-shark (Comment 110) : Welcome :-) and as far as your question about Fred..I really don’t know what is going on. The official word is still a bruised hip but I am wondering if there isn’t more to it that we aren’t hearing. Even my French contacts in and around Toulouse have been oddly quiet and they normally are good for little tidbits of information that isn’t always made public.

  • @Milissa (Comment 161) : Fred ain’t really done much for us (as I predicted all along) so maybe it would be better if he went back to France. Maybe he’s more of an “industrial heartland” kinda guy and not so much a surfer dude… ;)

  • @robdylan (Comment 162) : I have to say that I’m disappointed in what Fred’s brought to the table whilst with the Sharks. It’s frustrating cos in the past I’ve seen what he’s capable of..yet now when it is needed the most he’s just not firing.

@Silver Fox (Comment 164) : I wish I could find someone to hire me for a bit of a paid holiday to SA. I was sitting at work today looking at my now empty box of Strawberry Pops thinking how much I missed SA and all of my SA family.

  • @Silver Fox (Comment 166) : :) awww thanks.

I really want to start playing and I have found 2 women’s teams that are local to me. Come the fall I think I’m going to go and watch some of their practices, before committing to a team.

I would have done that in the spring so I could start playing in the summer but the hubby-to-be ( 15 days left!!) was concerned about me being a bit broken and bruised for the wedding.
