Springbok Strike-force Strengthens Sharks

As expected, Sharks Head Coach John Plumtree has not resisted the urge to throw his returning Springboks back into the fray with all three released players named in the starting line-up for Friday night’s Absa Currie Cup clash with Western Province in Cape Town.

Michael Marnewick writes for www.sharksrugby.co.za that with the Sharks handily-placed in joint top position with the Blue Bulls and Free State Cheetahs, this match represents the ideal opportunity of getting the second round of matches off to a successful start.

Following last weekend’s convincing performance against Griquas, the Sharks will take an element of confidence into the game along with the boost in player depth, but will be tempered with the knowledge that despite being badly depleted, Province are under huge pressure to get a result following a less than successful campaign to date.

Frederic Michalak is back from a hip injury and will form a decidedly exciting international partnership with Ruan Pienaar while Francois Steyn will start at centre and Odwa Ndungane at wing as the three Boks add further attacking prowess to a team who found outstanding form a week ago and will look to continue in that vein.

Keegan Daniel will undergo a late fitness test and has been bracketed with Nikolai Blignaut at Eighthman, while Tighthead Prop Jannie du Plessis will be given as long as possible to recovery from a calf strain, otherwise his place will be taken by BJ Botha.

A side packed with 11 Internationals in the starting line-up will take a lot of confidence in their own abilities into this game mindful though that this is a game Province absolutely have to win, making for a tantalising fixture.

  • Very Good team.

    Ruan Pienaar cover for Michalak if injured or Steyn Cover for Michalak.

    With Rassie’s all loose forwards pack stratey it may be a bit of a concern if Daniel is not declared fit.

    I also find it strange that Blignaut is not bracketted anywhere on the bench. So they either start with him or they don’t play him at all. :sad:

  • That’s some alliteration in the headline!!! What a team, let’s just hope the guys aren’t too over-confident, because if we play like last week, minimal knocks and front up physically, we should get a BP win here.

  • HB- I expect nothing less than a BP win. I dont see how Plum would’ve resisted the temptation of using the Bok trio when the main aim of releasing them was to give them game time. For all we know this squad was picked by PDV :lol:

  • Interesting to see Barritt on the reserve bench. Is he there because a)he was injured, b) because he has decided to leave the Sharks or c)because that would be from where his future game time with the Sharks would have been anyway and hence his reason for b).

  • How does the inclusion of two out-of-form players in Pienaar and Steyn, who also has not played a full game of rugby in months, strengthen a side? After the guys they had klapped Griquas just last week?

    I am curious.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 1) : I agree Blignaut is a bit perplexing I mean one can hardly compare him to Daniels ( is he injured) type of game. If Ice’s friend the Birthday Boy is on the bench he can be used as cover at 7 Deysel or Botes can play at 8 so strange indeed. It would be great to see BJ start with Deon again, the first scrum would set the tone for the evening..
    On paper this side should decimate a weakened and beleaguered Western Problems outfit; but this is the Sharks we talking about :wink:

    Makes sense Robd…it is more difficult to hide lack of skills at 8 than 7…Deysel will be more effective as second loosie to the tackle ball area (in terms of turning over possession if last weeks game is anything to go by)…and will be more effective at picking up the ball behind the scrum and drive (especially if an attacking scrum close to the tryline)…

    Don’t seem that Plum see’s it that way…maybe they play dif roles depending on the play…interchange…and the number on the back is merely that…a number…

  • @I’ce (Rebel With a Cause) (Comment 69) :

    Here are some of my favourites;

    Concentration is the ability to think about absolutely nothing when it is absolutely necessary.

    The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary.

    Before you can win a game, you have to not lose it.

    The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.

    On focus for a game: If you chase two rabbits, both will escape.

    Again on focus and concentration: Even if you are on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.

  • Ice, if your U15 rugby team could understand a quote / words of inspiration by Big Fish then they are on a hiding to nothing and should be playing something else. Just tune them that winners get the hot babes. Keep it simple.

  • Something I used to tell my players;

    Rugby is about the inches, the small battles. Don’t get ahead of yourself because once you lose focus on the simply things, the small battles, you will lose the ultimate war.

    So be hard on yourself, each tackle you make should be an improvement on the one before – win these small battles, and you will win the war.

    But do not forget to do it as a team, because 15 brilliant individuals will still lose a match, but one focussed team will always win.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 97) : Not too shabby, considering…

    If you ask me Province are actually battling with friction between Rassie and AC. But then, what the hell did they expect?

    Joe Pieterson as a makeshift flyhalf? I am inclined to opt for giving one of the young ones a chance there. You may just find that they can well take the step up.
