Sharks get new Argentine Prop

The Sharks have secured the services of Argentine prop Juan Pablo Orlandi for the remainder of the season.

Rugby Rovigo have today announced that prop Juan Pablo Orlandi will Join the Sharks until the end of October 2008.

Details are a little sketchy at present but and official announcement from the club reveals that Orlandi will be joining the Sharks on 20 August.

Quite why the Sharks have opted to buy another prop for the rest of the CC season is uncertain, but maybe it is an initial contract that will serve as a trial period.

Orlandi, a loosehead prop, represented Argentina A at the recent Churchill Cup played in Canada.

  • I can only see this as a trial period for future possibility.

We are NOT in need of a Loosehead in the CC are we?

Luke wants to come back and in the interest of harmony in the team we feel it best that he is the only flyhalf in the squad.

  • but still, beast, deon and robbie can all cover open side, and by the time we play again we will have jannie, bj and pat ready for tight side. we don’t need any more bench sitters. not to mention our new prop john smit.

  • maybe they are worried about beast and the boks, eventhough it will only be one game he could potentially miss. and an injury to deon could hurt us. why aren’t we scouting for capable full backs. and back up centres as frans’ defence was average on friday.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 22) : no, one season of below par performances and the loss of Brad and the not so great performances of Strauss and Murray. I am more than happy to let Frans prove his worth during the rest of the cc, but we still need back up at 12 and 13. Riaan is good but he is only one man. And what happens if Ruan refuses flyhalf and Frans has to move there, remember there is no Freddy next year.

  • It’s quite simple, really. Ruan HAS to play flyhalf next year. There is no other option.

  • You have to remember the Sharks aren’t in the same position as other Unions come s14, where province can call on players from Boland, Cheetahs have Griquas, Bulls have Pumas and Lions have Valke. We dumped corrupt EP and our only development grounds are the Cheetahs and when the season starts whoever is on the team sheet for a Union cannot be touched by another union. so buy time is now, not after cc.

  • @try time (Comment 25) : if we could buy 5 players to ensure we win the Super 14 next year, I would have the following (in no particular order)

    Willem Alberts
    Duane Vermeulen
    Peter Grant
    Bradley Barritt
    Louis Ludick

  • @robdylan (Comment 24) : i wish that was true. look how great frans played when he was told he was a fullback. still battling with him. no ruan needs to decide himself. both plum and pdv want him to play 10, but he doesn’t seem to want to budge. hopefully he sees the light. fourie du preez showed on saturday that ruan isn’t getting the bok spot ahead of him.

  • @try time (Comment 30) : Yes, but one cannot shop if you don’t know what you need. I am not talking short term here, rugby is sort of an ongoig thing, so from year to year, first get your house in order, then go and buy what you need. It seems to me the Sharks are spending for the sake of spending. I more or less agree with@robdylan (Comment 26) : list.

  • @Silver Fox (Comment 42) : I disagree. I think Ruan and Frans need to have their prospects explained to them in realistic terms. Like “Ruan – you are the second best scrumhalf at the Sharks and only the 4th best in the country. Either you sit on the bench, or you play flyhalf. Your choice”.

And “Frans – you are not fast enough, either in your head or in your hands and feet, to play flyhalf. You can choose 12 or 15 next year, but you ain’t gonna be playing 10. Deal with it”

  • The Sharks needs some good backup for Deysel in the loosies, we struggled without him in the side, at scrumhalf we don’t have a problem.

And fly half, I hope Ruan opens his eyes and realizes Butch James is the only guy really standing in his way of a starting position if he takes on the 10 jersey. If he doesn’t want to play there for the Sharks, the only guy I would want there is Butch, South Africa has crap fly halves and it’s because we always move them around. I don’t know how many of our utility backs are fly halves. It’s our own fualt that we are sitting with this problem.

Center is not really a problem, because with Barritt leaving Steyn should play there, and we still have Struass, Swanepoel, Waylon and Adi, unless Adi is leaving to.

Fullback really isn’t a problem, because half the guys that have played for us on the wing are fullbacks. JP should be playing there, his catching has improved and he reads the game exceptionally well from the back.

I don’t know why we’re getting a prop though, I’m happy with what we have.
