Adi’s dream to come true

Written by Andre Bosch (KSA Shark ©)

Posted in :In the news, Springboks, Tri Nations on 11 Aug 2008 at 07:24

To play in a rugby test at Newlands, with his family watching from the stands, is a dream that is about to come true for Springbok centre Adrian Jacobs.

Liam Del Carme reports in Beeld that Jacobs has never played in an international in Cape Town, but he should be in South Africa’s team for the Tri-Nations match against New Zealand on Saturday.

“It’s a big match and I’m looking forward to it,” Jacobs said after scoring only his second try in six years for the Springboks at the weekend.

“I hope my parents, my wife and my children will be there to support me. I only hope it won’t be too cold,” the Sharks midfielder said after making a man-of-the-match contribution to the victory over Argentina.

Jacobs is not necessarily out to silence his critics, even though there were many of them when Springbok coach Peter de Villiers selected him earlier this year.

But he has not put a foot wrong since returning to the national squad.

“One can never satisfy everyone,” he says. “Criticism is strange. One must try to turn it into something positive.

“I never complained. People are sceptical. But they actually want you to do well.

“It helps if the coach supports you. I hope I am repaying him. Peter is a wonderful coach. Whether you’re big or small, he supports you.

“I can only thank him for fetching me from the wilderness.”

Jacobs has turned out at inside centre as well as outside centre and he does not have a specific preference for either position.

“I play where the coach needs me. I don’t really mind playing at either 12 or 13. It’s a great privilege to play for South Africa.”

It was also a great feeling to score a try for South Africa, he added.

He has rarely put a foot wrong in the side so far this season (even if he is my third choice after JF and Steyn)… would like nothing more than to see him step around Smith and Nonu to score against the AB’s at Newlands…

Please take a HUUUUGE banner along with the words: “PDV 4 PRESIDENT” emblazoned in bold lettering.

Alternatively if you’d prefer something more subtle “PDV DIE BESTE BAAS VAN DIE BOKKE OOIT” would also suffice

I’ll pay for your hotdog and frulati in return.

On the positive side, this grey dump is affording this blekkie the opportunity to buy a few Vodacom blekkie shares. So can’t complain to much.

In theory, should I own a few Vodacom shares, I would have some influence on the company’s running. Step 1, would be to put an end to those annoying “Please Call Me’s.” How is the company to show any profits when all the subscribers are simply to tight to make an actual call???

    Step 2: Ban MIXIT!

On a serious note, supposedly Brendall Brandt and Thabang Molefe are SKW’s midfielders. Heard anything bout Molefe’s performances? Good enuff to challenge Newman for the WP backup spot yet?

  • Newman seems to be struggling to settle in. Reckon must be hard to settle down when the flyhalf is inept and the forwards are getting hammered. Do believe he has potential as a ball playing 12.

WPW has also asked around and come up with similar results.

Popular verdict is (almost a quote) Lekka going forward maar ThaBANG on defence.

Lets be honest, this is probably more of an “apprenticeship” than anything else for Morgan. With JdV and Bobo covering 12, his always gonna struggle for decent game time. Probably better off looking elsewhere. Lions could do with a 12 who shows some potential.

    @Charlie (Comment 88) :

I used to be and might still be (Jury is still out) one of the naysayers.

Adi is not the best we have at 13, but he is the best available at the moment and I have no problem with him being there at the moment, but once Fourie is fit the I am afraid if he even comes close to his regular form, Adi will have to sit on the bench.

And the sad thing is that he might be in a situation of either in the Starting XV or out of the 22 completely. My reason for that is that Steyn or someone similar (Pienaar maybe) may be a better option as they offer more flexibility in term of options for the sub to be used as.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 90) : well, I think Adi is a phenomenal player and is doing the absolute best he can every week. He’s out there sweating blood for the Boks and the only thanks he ever gets is to be called “average” and “not Jacque Fourie”. Bollocks. Fourie must come and take his jersey back if he’s so much better than Adi.

I agree 100% that Adi is sweating blood and giving his all each week, but that doesn’t make him the best though.

As i said above best at the mo, but maybe not later

The player in possession of the jersey must be played out of it.

  • @robdylan (Comment 92) : Do I detect distinction towards certain players? :???: C’mon Rob, if sweating and giving your best are all that is called for, there would be no discussions about quality players. BTW, I am also one of the so-called naysayers regarding Adi, but let me qualify that statement. If I personally rate Adi as 2nd, 3rd or even 4th best, it is still only my opinion. And does by no means implicate that he is not a very good player. It is only that I like someone else more, for my own personal reasons. Like Pieter Hendriks likes to say,” Go Adi, you beauty!! ”

provided he has been in possesion for more than just a game or two, which in this case he has.

Just don’t expect him to walk into the 13 when he get’s back to the Sharks. Not even frans Steyn mamaged that after winning a RWC.  (That was more a dig at the coaches not working together than anything else)

I know a lot of people out there rated Brad better than Steyn at 12 this season but I just feel if a player is the Bok selection in a position then he should be the 1st choice at his province. IMO Steyn should have been the 12 at the start of the S14 and then he would have been in a MUCH better position now and not have been wasted as he has been this year, and in that light now that Jacobs is the bok 13 he should be played ahead of Murray when he comes back home.

There’s no doubt DM farked Murray’s game last S14 season first giving him different 10′s, 12′s then a shift to wing and then dropped… IMO he played no worse with no ball than Adi did in his two games with Barrit on his inside (one being the Tahs)…

What I am trying to say is that a player who has the bok jersey in a certain position sewn up should have the same jersey sewn up at his province.

This system where the Bok 12 had to play everywhere but 12 for his province just messes up SA Rugby. Steyn is a classic example and if it happens to Adi as well then I will be pissed. Murray is having an average season and only just last week started showing some decent form. When Adi comes back to the Sharks he should be the automatic 13.

DM didn’t just stuff Murray he stuffed Steyn as well IMO.

Adi Jacobs was also chuffed around, but seems to never complain and always performed well no matter the number on his back (surely do not need time to settle in a certain position ala Francois Steyn), IMO he is surely a quality player and quite frankly in a different class then Murray and Steyn…
